Remember not to get your spacing too close...you can cut a hole in the fabric and it will be weaker than if you hadn't done it at all.

Nothing wrong with those stitches. Not sure about the zig zag vs dedicated straight stitch info (never looked into it), but the operation of the needle and bobbin is still the same, so I don't think...
It is huge, with a tensile that is almost 7x's greater than #69 (73 lbs vs 11lbs). It is used on saddles, harness and such. I can't imagine using it on anything for a hammock. It would look crappy...
I'd say $100 is too much. You can find them for less. IF it sews nice, I'd offer $50 at most.
I was just being sarcastic...6 cord is size 415...probably couldn't even get a needle with an eye big enough to thread it through (for the Kenmore). I use 415 on my holsters and stuff, and it is...
You couldn't get 6 cord to feed through a Kenmore?
A walking foot will certainly help, but it won't be as positive of a feed as a needle feed. Given the prices though, you really have to want a needle feed! I have one for my shop, and it was $1100....
As far as I know (and I am no expert), the only needle feed machines available will be Industrial Machines. I don't recall ever seeing a Needle Fed Machine that was a portable. Not sure I have ever...
What on earth are you sewing on a parachute that you need a Singer Class 7 machine for?
If you have slipping, I would try the walking foot attachment and see if it helps. When you have multiple layers of slippery stuff, you probably would be better off with a Needle Feed instead of a...
Finally picked up my Brother LS2-B837 and got it set up in the shop. What a beast, and I don't think I'll have to change bobbins quite as often!

Watch the beginning of this vid, although most of what she shows applies to woven fabric, not ripstop. Around 8 minute mark she shows you how to square the fabric.

Given that 3mm has a breaking strength of 2200lbs, I think you could pull the core and give it a test.
What diameter did you buy?
Can you pull the core from a cut piece?
Light fabrics are tough to get the tension right. Have you tried making both top and bobbin thread tensions heavier? Light tension is more susceptible to variations in unwinding the thread from the...
How much support do you get for your head?
Are you saying the walking foot is gathering dust? If so, why do you find it too slow? My Brother will do 3000 SPM, which is way faster than I would ever sew, but I do realize some of the drop feed...
What machine did you order BTW?
A walking foot will always be superior to a drop feed. The materials are pinched between the foot and the feed dogs and moved together in unison. I would not listen to a word that dealership said.
Was it a full 60" wide?
It sews way faster than I can think as well! Industrials take a bit of practice, and luckily this isn't my first.
As for the Kenmore, someone is going to get a hell of a machine. It has the 2...
My latest (and last)...Brother LS2-B837. This thing has a HUGE bobbin - Size "U". Has a walking foot, drop feed and needle feed. Dial adjustable stitch length and reverse. Between this and my old...
The top of thread has to go around the bobbin in order to create the stitch. Every industrial machine on the planet would work the way you described if it could be done.
Needle size is totally dependent on thread size. You can go bigger, but smaller will cause problems.
As long as it works the way you want it to, there is no need to worry about it. If you get maxed out and need more, then you can loosen the bobbin tension by 1/8th turn and try again. When I use...
Nylon stretches, Polyester not so much.
try sewing through 2 3x5 cards, very slowly, and see what happens. If it does the same thing, then your feed dogs are probably not level with the throat plate, causing it to grab one part of the...
Why not use a seamstress tape to measure around everything, then add your seam allowance and then cut your fabric? For stuff like this, I just cut a small strip, 3"-4" wide, and sew it up to see...
Based on some testing that I did on breaking strength of various stitches, I'd do something like this one. I would, however, use two rows of bar tacks so that the the load was applied in shear...
The needle should always be on the way back down (just past top dead center) to ensure that the thread releases properly.
No treadle...3/4 HP on the big machines, but they are a Needle and Awl Machine. The Awl comes down from the top and cuts the hole, and then the needle (which is just like a crochet hook) comes up...
Doesn't work to well for Hammocks or Tarps though!
Stay away from cotton...polyester is a good choice.
What machine did you buy?
My wife's machine does that when you push it through some thick stuff. It causes the bobbin case to pop out. If you open the lid and put pressure on the face of the bobbin while wiggling it it will...
I may end up using my Mom's early 80's Bernina 830 for my tarp project instead. She had it packed away I might pull it out of hiding to do the bar tacking, etc.
It's a harness machine for sewing leather (fingers too if you're not careful), called a Randall Union Lockstitch. It will go through 1" without skipping a beat. It is a needle and awl type machine....
Here's mine...

Thanks - definitely want Honey Brown
Thanks...I took look at the link and I would definitely prefer the honey brown. Sold out though :(
Still haven't found a picture of the Navy or Green... Anyone have questions pic they could post?
Same here - I was just getting ready to pull the trigger on a 1.1 DL in Honey Brown when I found this thread and they were already sold out and the 1.9 DL's were too!
Typical...a bit too late on this one!
That's OK...I am too :D
Having a one man shop myself, I can tell you that it takes very little to get burried (I don't make hammocks though). The only way to get faster is to cut corners or add employees. Cut corners and...
Anyone have pictures of the Honey Brown and the Green that they could post?
I recently found HF, then the Switchback and I am ready to order. I am just not sure of what color I want. I like...
