See, that's why you guys are awesome. Thanks!
I want to set up my backpacking hammock as a chair and I need a stand.
I've got a great idea for how you could build one with a metal base you slide 2x4s into, but I don't have a welder.
So,...
Yeah, I have ruined a couple pairs of scissors...
I would suggest a metal knife over scissors if for no other reason than, you can re-sharpen them.
So, I keep my set up in the car sometimes so that it's accessible.
How do you think that tape would hold up in the heat?
If you call Singer they will look it up for you and can usually tell you all about it. Specific Date and Place of Manufacture.
Very cool.
Impressive drawing.
Do you need a seam allowance on the right side?
You have 1/4" on the left, seems like it would be the same on the right.
Starting the bury is the hardest part.
I have to work over a strand at a time to get started.
If it bunches up at all in the beginning, it will bind on itself.
That is really cool.
What do you think about sewing those curtains?
I was thinking of maybe sewing a rope into the edge for tie outs...
I cant watch the videos at the moment, but if you start with a 17" by 17" square you should have plenty left over for whatever type of channel you want.
Fold it over with the wrong side out,...
Oh yeah, your right. Forgot about that part.
Add a couple inches for that though and you are still not much higher than the fisherman's solution.
I'm 6'4" and 240 and I have a 13' by 90" table cloth hammock.
It's unnecessarily large, but you can always make it shorter by moving the larks-headed AmSteel in a few inches. (If you have a whipped...
You can do it with less. You need a total bury of 5" plus 1" taper on one side.
So 2' for the loop and 6" for one bury and probably 2" for the other side.
24" + 6" + 2" = 32"
A double...
Thanks! She liked the 221 and had 3 of them.
Mom has the other two.
I don't have the serial number handy, but I called Singer the other day and it was Born on April 20, 1948 in Elizabeth NJ, and...
It would help if we could see it I think.
I would go +1 in the tape though. That sounds like the best idea, and you can even get tape that is sand-papery so there would be even more friction.
...
I have been wondering about this after getting the surger.
I don't know if the tapered spool would effect the twist though.
I thought it was just to let the spool unwind from the top more easily....
+1
I have a 156" by 90" beast I made for about $30 including ridge-line and suspension.
It's the table cloth for the fabric and then mule tape and amsteel for everything else. I also went the...
Here are my thread injectors. But before you get the wrong idea. I'm passable but not the greatest thread injector.
I got the machines from different grandmothers.
I'm not worried about the time, I'm trying to make a smaller loop that is still strong.
I've been thinking about this and I think you only need one side to have the full bury for strength.
The other side you could just hide the tail with a one or two inch bury and then put the 5"-6"...
I'll answer the one I know.
It doesn't. In my limited experience with AmSteel it's pretty much steel cable in disguise.
Yeeaaaa!
That worked!
I knew it would be something simple.
I'll look into those DVD's too. I would prefer to do my own repairs.
You supposed to do that?
I didn't know. Thanks! I'll try that when I get home.
Edit-It does have a belt. It's just not shown, or I have the wrong diagram.
I thought of that, but even when I turn the wheel by hand, it has the same problem.
I don't know if the clutch is slipping or something is bound up somewhere.
Something strange is happening with my thread injector, and I don't know if it is a big deal, or something simple.
I have a 221 Featherweight that my grandmother got as a wedding present in the...
Yeah, I think some testing will be requiered.
I'm quickly learning that the 156' by 90' hammock is a beast :D
Not necessarily a bad thing though.
Nice. Thanks, I'll have to try some different ones.
I think I'll pull the bottom out a little on the next one and see how that goes.
Nice Thanks!
I got the buries to go a lot more smoothly with guitar string too.
Is there a formula or rule of thumb for how much shorter my AmSteel will get when I bury an end in it?
For example, if I do a 6" bury, how much of the line I bury into will I need to completely...
That's cool, but it doesn't show the fold.
Is it just an accordion fold?
Something altogether different.
Something like you posted Here
:D
I was wondering if anyone else had different ways to fold the ends.
I've tried searching the forum, but I'm sure I'm doing it wrong....
Are there any tutorials for folded end hammocks?
Preferably a video, but anything with some good pics would work.
Nice, I like that.
New sewing on either.
Though after my first splice, I have to say sewing might be easier.
Burying the ends is tough....
Aaahhhh, that makes sense.
Thanks!
That sounds good.
What are those? :D
Dutch clips?
You are right, I am in the area of false economy, and I will need more AmSteel. :D
But, I also told my 4 year old daughter that if she was good at school we would build the new hammocks this...
Nice page!
Ok, plan C, or D, I forget which one I'm on.
Larks head on one end, and double Brummel to MSH on the other, so there is some adjustment in there.
Unless, this:...
Yes, that is what I am describing, but looking at the suggested bury lengths, I don't think it would help with reducing the amount of amsteel needed.
Go on.....:D
Probably because I never found any pics on it, and I can't figure how it would work....
Would you just tie a larks-head onto the hammock?
Come to think of it, do both legs of the larks head have to be supported?
I could Brummel one end and back splice the other and save a couple feet...
So I guess its sort of a hybrid ring buckle suspension.
Its a larks head on the hammock and then MSH on the straps.
The straps are 15' so yeah they're pretty long.
Added-I have a surplus of...
Yeah, that does help.
What I am ultimately trying to do is use as little AmSteel as possible for the time being.
So I need the loop to be little, but not so small that the MSH is on top of the...
I'm not using whoopies, I'm using continuous loops.
For those of you that use a larks-head to MSH for the suspension:
How long do you make your continuous loops?
Is that a MSH in that pick or is it set up like rings?
So, I'm going to try the continuous loop thing.
I'm going to use it to put larks heads on a whipped end going to a MSH.
How much AmSteel should I use for each loop?
I want to conserve as much as...
I like the illustration with the two half hitches and the taut-line.
I would like to add that the taut-line is often mis-used because of an error in some of the first scouting materials that...
Oh, hhhhmmm.... I don't know if I have a scale that measures things that light.
Probably whatever stock aluminum the diameter of a pencil would weigh?
I'll see if there is a scale at work that...
I looked into it :D
And got some from a member here. Thanks Olzeke!
My next question is, can I just use water knots to put the loops in the webbing?
That shouldn't weaken things too much...
I recently found a good source for toggles--I think....
I found an old wind chime hanging around the house.
It's one of the little ones that you put on a door or over a crib or something like...
