I've been sleeping in a hammock every night since 2004. I have forgotten how to sleep in a bed.
I tell people that I sleep as well backpacking as I do at home.
It's a matter of time. The first solo night, I got no sleep. The second was better. After a couple dozen nights, I finally was able to sleep through the night. I use ear plugs to drown out the creepy...
Simple, easy and something I wouldn't have thought of ... thanks for sharing!
Wishing you the best. Your HR keeps me warm 8 months of the year and the Mt. Washington the remaining 4. Great products and service!
Because of this thread, I finally changed my user ID (from Hike4WD) to what my trail name really is: Scratch
I hike in the desert and after 10 hours, I generally look like this:

Let us know when you open for business ... I'd like a Chicago Bears themed hammock and tarp. Nice work!
A work of art and
a labor of love!

I have 2 JRB down hoods that I use as booties. They have draw strings. Very nice and warm ... and dual purpose, as I can use them as a hood too.
why is it that you only compare your tent weight to a hammock + UQ + TQ?
You should also be adding in your sleeping bag + pad weight.
The hammock system total will still be a little heavier than...
2 stakes (one in back of the other) appear to be sufficient to keep the hammock stable (in hard soil).
I've tried the 2 rock approach ... but finding rocks that are appropriately spaced that have...
Most of the hiking I do in the winter is in the desert. When I went out a few weeks ago, I knew it would be tough to find a spot to hang, so I just brought my tent. I was miserable ... tossed and...
I like it. Very creative! I enjoy seeing new variations on a theme.
I might even switch my suspension to this.
Kudos!
I still prefer solo. Bush-whacking is sometimes problematic. Been in many situations where I had to turn-around and go back rather than risk going up/down a steep rock face. If I'm hiking off-trail,...
I've tried the ridgeline and the 2 line method of attaching a tarp.
I've never been strapped for time when backpacking. So the "faster" setup time for using the ridgeline, to me, isn't persuasive. I...
I went backpacking last weekend. Took my tent, since I didn't want to spend the 1-2 hours finding some rocks to hang from. It's been raining a lot in AZ the last few weeks. My tent and sleeping bag...

Being a gram weenie, that's funny!!
JayS, this is interesting advice. I assume you also suffer from motion sickness and this works for you? I would like to try it and would just be elated if it actually works. If I were to turn around...
Welcome to the forum, zer0vector. I've suffered from motion sickness all my life. When I first started using a hammock, the swaying gave me a bad sensation and I worried that it wouldn't work for me....
Per comments on BPL, I think the reason they are hard to find is GoLite is supposedly changing it for 2010. THey are putting a bit more down in the Ultra 20. So it will be maybe 4-5oz heavier, but...
The reasons I like a taut RL is:
1) It does a better job of holding the bugnet away from me on my BB.
2) It does a better job of holding the various stuff sacks I hang from it at night.
If it...
OK, I'll go on record and say that I've used a slack ridgeline to create more sag in my hammock. I liked more sag in my hammock and the only way I could get it was with a sagging ridgeline. However,...
I modified the ridgeline on my BB to a whoopie sling + carabiner. After a period of 'experimenting' to find the most comfortable amount of sag, I leave the whoopie sling ridgeline at a fixed length....
I've seen barbed wire embedded in otherwise healthy trees ... apparently wrapped around it years ago. The damage done to a tree by a strap (or even a rope) during an 8 hour period is cosmetic (IMHO)....
I've been 'tweaking' my under insulation since I joined this forum. I have a double layer BB and am in the UL backpacking crowd. I've tried pads, yeti's and JRB UQ's. Here are my current opinions:
...
Yes, there's some deformation. However, I don't find it objectionable. For me, it's a simple solution and keeps the bury length short. Time will tell if there's any downside.
I prefer to hang a weighted stuff sack to the fixed eye on the back of the constrictor. No need for a prusik. But nice solution.
All I used was an UQ ... no pad. I think I'll try it again with the head raised as high as I can go without sliding to the end. I need to work out the bugs, because I really do like it. Then it will...
I bought a bridge hammock recently. Upon initially laying in it, I thought I was going to really enjoy it. I liked the lay. It just felt good. I definitely needed a pillow for my head, whereas my...
I initially switched to the UCR because of less Amsteel/weight. However, I also discovered another advantage (that I haven't seen discussed) ... ease of adjusting under load.
I'll generally get my...
I'm using an 8" bury on my UCR by hanging weight on the other end. Works fine. Forgot to attach them once and became a "groundling" before I knew it.
No, haven't tried a bungie for tension. Good idea! I get enough weight by stowing my backback gear in the sacks, so I haven't needed to supplement with rocks ... and the bags need to hang somewhere....
Although, I could have made the eye splice (to be connected to a marlin spike) a little shorter ... since I ended-up locking it anyways. It's currently a 6" bury.
The weight savings is in using a UCR instead of a whoopie. I wanted a shorter bury to allow a shorter adjustment length. I'm not a decigram weenie ... yet!
I just received my BMBH and took Grizz's advice and removed the webbing.
Here's the original:

I avoided the cams/nuts due to weight as well. I figured if I could make it work without, I'd be happier. Besides, I think it was easier finding rock protrusions I could wrap the amsteel around...
I never put whoopies on the traveler.
But the traveler weighed 20.5oz with just the 7/64" amsteel that was attached. A whoopie should add another 1oz (10' on either end).
I did initially, but since I have no rock climbing experience, I wouldn't know how secure it would be. The way I did it, I always found a substantial enough rock I could loop the Amsteel around....
I finally constructed a hammock stand in the backyard so I could do experimentation.

Yes, I'm well aware of flash floods. I've been too close for comfort on several occassions. You're right ... scary! :scared:
Since trees are on the endangered species list in the desert , I went out a couple weeks ago to determine how difficult it would be to hang from rocks instead. I learned a few things.
1) I...
Mustardman, I agree with the foot box being a little more difficult to fully insulate.
If I curl in more of a fetal position, I can keep my feet warm ... but then I get tired of that position,...
That's where I placed my Evazote nightlight pad ... in the pad layer of the footbox. In fact, I placed my entire Murmur BP with nightlight still attached in the footbox area. But my feet still didn't...
I was out last weekend and the temperature dipped to 30F. I have the 3 season yeti, but also brought along a 24"x42" piece of 1/4" Evazote from GG and placed in the pad layer. I'm a cold sleeper and...
I can't help you out, but I sure enjoyed reading about your fabric store visit. It was hilarious.
I think you should try another store, so we can read episode 2.
I posted it here.
Same for me on the acid reflux and head higher than feet.
I found that more sag is what I needed to eliminate the discomfort under my legs. I ended up making the ridgeline adjustable so I could...
I like making them as well. What don't you like about the setup? I find that they are difficult to adjust under load, but still prefer them.
Nice pics. Thanks for sharing!!
Are you using 2 tarps, one on top of the other?
If yes, any particular reason?
