I'm in LA which is actually not that bad of a location for backpacking.
Are you going to be smushed against the rock with this method though? OR maybe you can find some overheads and work with them.
I have only been on the PCT in the San Gabriels but its beautiful up there. Might want to check out the section from Big Bear to Mt Baldy.
