That's what I've done a couple times - get in there nearby, instead of trying to hike in through the dark. I just lean my bow, or hang it, on a tree.
Might try using my heater body suit to sleep in...

Hammocks are like cucumbers from the garden; first there's one, then 2 more, then half a dozen!

Tents are not that uncommon here in the Adirondacs.
I haven't hunted FROM the hammock per se. But a base camp has allowed me to stay overnight in the woods. And now, when out solo, I hang.
I've just tried hair ties, and I haven't tried too hard, but much initial impression is that the snake is tough to wrestle.

That's not a Marlin spike hitch, unless I'm mistaken. You've got the 'biner larksheaded onto your strap?
I use a similar set up with my big cotton Brazil style hammock. Big cheap rope w/ a truckers hitch, looped directly or through straps to whatever.
