My back loves my Hammock's....has saved me a ton of back grief
True but you take all that fluff off and then play with the sag and see if you can find a happy spot for this hammock ...if you do find the sweet spot and it falls outside the length of the current...
Remove the ridge line and take the hammock out side to setup. Keep Adjusting the sag of the hammock even height of the tree straps (higher lower one end to the other) and see if you can find a happy...
Humm...I'm losing count of how many yrs I have been full time in the hammock and my back loves me. My back though sure does not like beds...beds are plain outright torture devices.
Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not cheap out in cold temps as your life may be dependent on your gear especially when far into the hills away from your car or a cabin or......
Life is a lot easier...
I would say 20f is safe. I figure my 20 and 40 to be good for 15f. 0 and 20f good to -35f
Maximizing BackyardTesting is the only way to know what your comfort base lines are as everyone is different.
I think the situation is days are cooler but nights are warmer due to more cloud cover.
It is horrid on the part of msm media and warmist to tout 2nd hottest yr based on 30yrs of history...really...
Props to you BillyBob for all the effort you have put into the VB testing and posting of results.
For anyone interested in cold weather moisture management using Vapour Barrier's you must follow...
Here is my take on the problem.
I consider all my UQ's good for 10f above the rating
Cinch the UQ tight and I do mean tight.....With my UGQ quilts they have a cord lock, that cord lock will slip,...
Bottomed out at -34c/-30f last couple of nights and that may end the deep cold for this season.... be around 0f tonight it's looking like = balmy
Yes ...0 & 20* UQ and TQ and have 40* set on stand by for stupid cold...figure I'm good for -45c
My UGQ's have the cord lock but I find it can slip so I tie off as well to keep the tension then adjust the secondary for final fit
Gawd ...you just have to mention sleeping outside in my current conditions of -33c and 'outsiders' give off that absolutely perplexed look that they best just avoid you cause your are outright...
I would not even concern myself with it. A runny nose is just 'normal' for me in the cold and it has zero affect on me when sleeping (-30 and -33c last couple nights and repeat tonight for me). Bury...
No turning back now when you get that whole setup going...if the tent is silpoly or so you will get some frosting on the inside...just let it be. The heat will dry it off accordingly to how hot vs...
Yup
When it comes to atmospheric conditions there is just no escaping moisture build up at times. In cooler temps it can be utterly frustrating at times chasing your tail trying to find answers. ...
My Silpoly Hammock Hot Tent has many burn holes in it from flying embers out of the stove pipe....just part of the game as spark arrestors either clog or no worky.
I just seam seal the hole at some...
I just sew tears up using a zig zag pattern and then seam seal
Spend the extra coin on 6x6 posts.... they will be way more secure than any 4x4. I would do 15' min spacing using 12' posts (can hang your tarp higher up this way)
Just back fill your hole with your...
Congrats....When I'm home every night has been outdoors for the last several yrs...lost track haha. But every night is still a hammock night regardless.
The problem I have with top quilts is I will...
Below 10*f the zero is a must....the 20/40 mix is just not going to cut it
I think it depends on at which temps you want/will bottom out at....if that's say 10*-15*f on occasion then stack the 20/40...
Geesh 4-5 hrs North of me in North end BC it is/has already been snowing...upwards of a foot hahaha
Hammock Hot Tent is ready to go....bring it on....
Buy the Hennessy Hex tarp or just go straight to any one of the cottage vendors listed on HF here and get a very nice 12' with options you see fit..ie doors
Another buy once cry once deal here
I use 6x6x14 posts in my case and set them for a diagonal hang across the deck corner with another post in the yard
Pics show my winter hammock tents setup and being mocked up
...
Oxi-clean will work very well against mold mildew ...basically sodium percarbonate when mixed with water makes hydrogen peroxide ...works like bleach without bleaching stuff
Merino Wool short of on the 'hot' nights of which we do not get very many

Hammock Camping in Luxury
Every night in the Hammock means a great day ahead...and repeat.
The 3am pee break.... especially when your snug as a bug in the warmth of down but after some 4yrs have not figured out a solution
Short of that is when I back yard push the quilts temp...

Buy that ..I might as well buy a "bed"
How many times can we re-invent the wheel...clearly if you use a Eno Banana many times....
I'll stay with my own banana and all the support my banana has from...
-30C / -20F last night and slept snug as a bug like any other night. Hoping tonight gets lower...be last chance this year by the looks of things.
I might see -30c Sat night out in the bedroom/deck .....be our first bit of "cold" for this winter season. -30c is easy peasy
So want to do -40 (lowest I have seen in these parts from historical...
Been over 2 yrs since I have slept on anything but the Hammy ...but going to find out end of Feb what a 'bed' is like again for a week possibly...will have a hammock with me but..
Life has never...

Get a set of 20* and 0*f down quilts(pay once cry once right there) ...combined your absolutely good to -30c snug as a bug. I start stacking at -12c to allow that 10*f buffer
I personal would not go...
AWESOME..... Keep up with the backyard testing to fully understand how your system works in all conditions (better to find the parameters in the backyard than out in the woods) plus allows you to...
I have a previous gen one with the 1.1oz fabric and it is perfectly fine but use a 1.1oz Robic xl full time.(Fabric from RSBTR)
If the fabric agrees with you go for it without fear.
I double my 0 and 20f quilts and figure I'm good to -40....-30c is easy peasy
-40 is what I want to sleep in....but it is a elusive temperature.
-28c, my lowest, is actually really nice cause the air here is dry...I hate dampness.
Either side of -18c I enjoy immensely...
KISS Principle
Use existing tie off points so having extra cordage helps
The dead man anchor is next
I would resist pounding stuff into the ground....but if the spot you must use gives you...
Silpoly 1.1oz PU4000 made into a Hammock Hot Tent....very impressed with how well this material works/stands up.

Highlights the importance of backyard testing or just plain getting out there and test test test...can never do enough really.
Also KISS principle should always be used. Hardware is only as good...
And I'd be one of them
Hammock Hot Tenting is pure luxury in the depths of winter...well anytime cool weather sets in
I use Canvas or Silpoly PU4000 1.1oz...
That frost is likely mostly moisture from you and being it is a 20*UQ in 20* weather with a 0* TQ the moisture/heat flowed in the path of least resistance.
Also a tarp does help mitigate frost by...
Ash is not a problem at all, it is a 'wood stove' nor the heat output of the stove on the silpoly...keep your set backs. You will get sparks...namely burnt creosote flying out the chimney and falling...
Why I built a tent for the Hammock and added a wood stove ...comfort rules.
