My only real concern with using rubber is the possible staining of the fabric if the tarp or tent is left rolled up for some time. The rubber out-gasses as it decays and breaks down and the vapors...

Why not use blown/used motorcycle inner tubes. They make great rubber bands as well. You can cut them as thin or as thick as you want. The best part....they are free. Just walk into a MC service area...

Its larger than braided mason's line. You might try trot line from a sports store or Walmart.
