If it had eaten one of my toes, it would be more yellow than that!:tonguesmilie:
Nice batch of photos! That rattlesnake looked like it had just eaten, and I still can't get over that yellow coloring.
With this group, there was not that much effort involved. Everyone showed up ready to go without any direction on my part. I just suggested the location and made a few fishing trips for recon...
Nice video! Thanks for getting it up there so quickly.
That was just a nice relaxed weekend in the mountain with fellow hangers and no particular plan. I look forward to seeing you folks again...
This is the last day to let us know if your want to go on the Horse Creek hang July 15-17 2011. This is the list as it stands so far:
YES
wisenber -late Friday afternoon
Roche -Friday...
I think my 3/4 ton suburban driving 180 miles will probably eat more gas than a bike going 650 miles. If to foot permits, I'll probably take my old trailhead Toyota to cut back a bit.
You're looking at a bit over 300 miles one way. That's no short undertaking for a weekend.
I'd help, but I'm coming from the West.
Looks like the weather will have lows in the upper 50's and the hottest will be in the low 80's. We'll be about 1000 feet above that forecast, so subtract about 3 degrees for the campsite. Those...
Hate to hear that.
We have a few days to go till the Horse Creek hang July 15-17 2011. This is the list as it stands so far:

I hear the poncho is much stealthier when covered in mud?
My tactical hiking technique presently involves more face planting. I have to be careful not to let anyone water it after it has been...
Now I hate to hear that! You're the only one I know that has a poncho that doubles as a groundcloth!
Besides, you won't get that many other opportunities to see someone with a hiking stride more...

Frogg Toggs and Driducks are perfect this time of year.

The "show tunes" offer might set you back a bit.
On another less showful note, here's the forecast for the area next weekend.
Looks like highs in the mid 80's and lows in the mid 60's...
I'm hoping to make it too. It's healing up enough to be bearable at the moment. I just have to make sure it's closed up enough not to get infected from the stream crossings. I figure I can hobble up...
I did a pretty good job of breaking a couple of toes on my left foot last week while fishing in the GSMNP. I'm doing much better since it happened Wednesday, but I will have to play it by ear. If I...
Hate to miss your Summertime regaling.
If you're looking for the complete set of 2011 TWRA fishing regulations, they can be found here. Page 25 mentions "Squibb" and "Sarvis Cove". Those are the regulations that apply to Horse Creek above...
The wild streams above where Squibb Creek enters Horse Creek are artificial lure and single hook only.
Catalooche has every type of trout and the lower section has small mouth bass also.
I'm gonna try to get down there I the next few days.
It is a bit steep. Let me know if you want to try Cataloochee some time. I'd be happy to meet you there and see some genuine gems.
A three day non-resident TN fishing license for all species is $33.50.
You can get one on-line here.
If you want to buy one in person, you could get one in Erwin, Greeneville or Newport depending...
I'm not sure that dismemberment is a valid excuse. We'll have to keep your deposit in that case.
Go ahead and put me down for wisenber +2. I may have a few more that are not in the forum that may be interested as well.
If you're fishing above the restricted area, the water does get pretty small, and the canopy gets pretty big. I caught a couple of little rainbows on Sarvis Cove, but I did not get to fight my way...
It sure isn't cheap in Tennessee. I think it was $47 for an instate with trout stamp and issuing fee.
Fishing is definitely an option. The restrictions are below the Squibb Creek intersection with Horse Creek. Above that is open to anyone. Our campsite is well uphill from that point. The closest...
I walked around in the campground area. The place was a real mess and looked to have taken a pretty direct hit from a tornado. The Iron Forge campground on the other side of Horse Creek is open....
The campground and the picnic area are closed. The back country site where we're going wasn't touched by the storms.
I might have had more luck with a Zebco and salmon eggs too, then again I might have gotten a $150 fine for doing it.
I guess I'll stick with my fly rod and fish up higher for now. Catching...
I went by there yesterday. There is fishing for those between 12 and 65 if you fish above the Squibb Creek bridge. That basically leaves, Squibb, Sarvis, Jennings and the upper part of Horse Creek to...
A bit of bad news for the fishing component of this outing:
"Horse Creek (Greene County, US Forest
Service Boundary Line upstream to the
junction of Squibb Creek)
Daily limit: 7 per day except...
Anyone know when they might be arriving? I'm hoping to head out that Friday morning.
I want to try my Tenkara out in the mornings, but I'd love to cross the creek into Sampson Mountain Wilderness to see some falls and find some blueberries and maybe see a bear or two.
Move me over to the "yes" and I may have a +2 compromised of infrequent backpackers.
Well hopefully we can make this a good one. The only question is how many folks will show up.
I'd say the immediate campsite has room for up to 12 without much issue. Beyond that, there are plenty...
Hopefully when you say "lower lot" you mean the one behind the gate that closes at 10 PM.
I imagine we will start our sign up list soon. If we get a lot of folks, parking could become an issue as...
There are quite a few swaths of tornado damage there. It seemed to have hit the campground quite hard, but our proposed back country site was untouched.
Spamburglar and I hiked from the trailhead up...

Here's your preview. Let the tree choosing begin!
Don't forget the semi-resident historian "James" who shared with us the location of some Civil War graves, blueberry patches and a long lost mountaintop baseball field.
I'll just keep the rest of...
If the pros can't help, I can offer a wealth of less useful information!
I think a couple of us are going to scout out the site tomorrow to make sure that there is not too much tornado damage. Once we verify that, I think we'll start a roll call and figure out the rest...
It's a pretty easy hike. You're son would be welcome too.
Most bears will balk when they see my super sweating powers in actions! I just wring my hat at them to ward them away.
If the blueberries are right, the bears will have to wait! I'm pretty territorial when it it comes to fresh picked blueberries in my pancakes!:D
Horse Creek is in my "on again off again list". Some years I'll visit ten times. Other years I may not go at all. There are just SO many places to hike and backpack around here that it is easy to let...
I think that has area has been declared a wilderness area since you were there last. At present there are not that many trails in Sampson. It has reverted to a few thousand acres of bushwacking once...
There is really no that much accurate info on the area. It has two campgrounds (which we won't be using.) A couple of creeks with feeders. Some trout fishing. A few waterfalls. probably around 30...
