Most of the posts I've seen in that regard seem to have been bad toggle material (rotten trail sticks, etc) or hanging the suspension *on* the toggle rather than behind the marlinspike knot.

Marlinspike hitch on a bight? Neat idea!
However, the covered amsteel won't work - a flexible covering won't spread the force. You'd still need to use straps.
