I'm a car/motorcycle camper, so I also don't worry about weight, and instead select for comfort, availability, and price. I used a bedsheet (woven, not knit) on one of my bridge hammocks and it is...
Something like this?

If you're worried about weight, a lot of the extra material at the ends can be trimmed back, I left it long to create a storage area....
I've used 1" ratchet straps and 3/16" cord (two strands per side). Check out my DIY thread for more info and some pics.
(Never mind, I see you already did. I'll just leave this here for other...
Price drop:
*SOLD* WBBB: $165

(about 15% off full price)
No idea, I'm fairly new to this, too. But I wouldn't worry about it, even at 14 stitches per inch, a 6' hammock would have over 4,000 stitches supporting your weight (two rows of stitching on each...
For Sale: Two brand new (but technically used) hammocks. Each was used for a few nights in the basement and the back yard, so while they are technically used, they are still in brand new condition....
Hammock #3: a test to see if a bed sheet is strong enough to be used in a bridge hammock (it is) and if you can use rope as the suspension (you can). The sheet is a poly/cotton blend and stretched...
I found a bed net (similar to the smaller one here: http://www.mosquitohammock.com/bednet.html ) at a local camping store. I poked a small hole on opposite top corners to run the hammock suspension...
I just made a bridge hammock using some thin rope instead of webbing, and it seems to be holding just fine (slept in it last night, even). I used two strands of rope, sewn in separately. The first...
I found this Singer Graduate at Goodwill, and it runs like a champ, despite probably being older than me. It was a happy coincidence that I found this model, as I later learned that it was designed...
Update to hammock V2.0:
So I've been working on my hammock, and I think it's done (for now).
Here's the bug net, it's sewn on to the ends, but drapes down the sides for easy access. I sewed a...
Well, here's version 2.0:
The specs:
64" between spreader bars
52" wide at spreader bars
36" wide at center
36" spreader bars
8" curve
The material:
I just made a bridge hammock out of the smaller version of this product (covers just one side of the gazebo: http://www.walmart.com/ip/First-Up-Tan-Sun-Wall/19902104 ) and it is strong enough to hold...
Thanks for the insight, I hadn't seen anything explaining the difference between various stitches, or what to use where, so I guessed. Thankfully it is just an experiment and will be soon replaced...
So now a question about structural integrity of fabric:
I noticed that the fabric appears to be trying to pull itself apart:

You can see how each stitch is pulling...
I used a parabolic curve, and while it's not the cat curve, it's close enough for me, and easier to work with.
Here's the spreadsheet I made, I've never used Google Docs, so hopefully the formulas...
So it has begun... I've got the DIY bug, my first thread injector, and a pile of raw materials.
I recently purchased a JRB bridge hammock and slept in it for about a week. It's a great hammock,...
PM sent to both of you.
To expand on the importance of the bowline: once you've learned how to tie it, you've also just taught yourself the sheet bend. It's the same knot and tied the same way, but is used to join two ropes...
While testing the hammock in the back yard, I heard an odd noise that at first sounded like two pieces of cloth or cardboard sliding past each-other, best described as a very airy "huff" sound....
By the way, I am an engineer, and I'm trying real hard to NOT sound like a smarty pants, but there are a few flaws in your design. While it would probably work, it's overly complex and has a weak...
