If a tarp is well built, there is no need for grosgrain anywhere.

If a tarp is well built, there is no need for grosgrain anywhere.
Normally, you can take the needle holes between your fingers and rub it together with some firmness and it will seal those up.
If it's the type of fabric I'm thinking about, I worry it wouldn't be breathable enough for a top quilt. Moisture needs to be able to flow through both layers of your quilt or bad things happen....
950fp
Rene over at BPL tested the Rose down and got 700fp with a DIY apparatus. May not be 100% accurate, but that seems reasonable.
Flat tarp will be super easy. I would do a 1in ridgeline seam and 1/2in hems on the sides. Also, you will need to decide how to attach your tie out reinforcements, etc. A lot of examples out there to...
Seattle Fabrics also has heat sealable nylon in the 30d variety. It's the lightest out there for MYOG'ers, but it ain't cheap.
Ryan
Works OK as a groundcloth, bivy tops, etc. Anything where you need mostly waterproof and breathable.

Ventum = Fair DWR, very low breathabilty 3cfm if I remember correctly. For reference, Argon67 is +40cfm. Very downproof.
I would go with Argon or Membrane10 without a second thought.
Ryan
Geez man. That's a lot of thought and work! Looking forward to the finished product.

Bill,
I use a Janome Magnolia 7330 and it has served me pretty well. Sews cuben, 10D nylon and silnylon like a dream and can handle *some* heavy stuff. Can also handle the thick Gutermans. If I...
A needle feed sewing machine with racing puller would work much better, but hair clips will also work pretty well. :)

Thru-Hiker Shield silnylon and the 30d that Lightheart Gear sells are both plenty waterproof for a bivy floor. Over 3,000mm HH if I remember correctly. Will be slick as snot though, and also comes in...
RIT seems to be kinda hit or miss. I think it has more to do with the colors being used as opposed to the brand of dye. Seems all the dark colors are great, but some of the yellows, greens, etc can...
I would have to run the math to see where 12oz gets you. Either way, even if you needed to add some more down later on, the KARO style will make it really easy. Just rip about 6in of side seam, stuff...
In my experience, even a tightly spaced KARO baffle system has inferior down control compared to horizontal baffles. It will be even more pronounced on a baffled quilt as opposed to sewn through. I...
A cat cut on the ridge line will work pretty well, but I would also put a cat cut on the edges that run perpendicular to the ridge line. It will help with a tight pitch while also leaving your...
Nice job. The heads are typically the weak spot on these carbon stakes. They should hold fine, but be leery of hammering the stakes in or using a string to pull the stakes out.

How about this question instead - Will 1500mm be waterproof enough for my type of shelter and in my area? If so, that extra 500mm has no consequence except for making a heavier tarp generally. In my...

They have 2nds fairly cheap also.
Ryan
I imagine that it's like cuben fiber which also is very low stretch. Cat cuts will make for the most drum tight pitch, but not as necessary as with silnylon.
Ryan
Good luck with it.
P.S. - I will try to be helpful. A more valid test of its waterproofness would be to put the TP inside your dry bag along with something heavy, roll it shut and then submerge it...
The two Zpacks dry bags in my gear closet say otherwise, but thanks for playing.
Ryan
Have any experience with Google SketchUp? That will help you with the dimensions of the doors.
Ryan
I'm going to go out on a limb and say the newest M50 is:
slightly lighter,
15% stronger and
more breathable than the 2014 M50.
Ryan
Simon-
You got it. You'll find that most/all of the failures will be right at the end of the reinforcement.
Ryan
I use 4oz dacron for my cuben reinforcements. Sorry, not familiar with that film to give you any real feedback.
Ryan
Yeah, I'm aware of Zpacks construction techniques. I've had two of their drybags and neither were waterproof.
Ryan
It's pretty light stuff, but not as light as you would think. Seems like its in the .7-.8oz per yard range. Some of the MYOG fabrics are lighter.
Ryan
Haha. Good point. Didn't notice your in FL. Use a thicker cuben and you will be golden. If you need some help with the construction of your dry bag, let me know.
Ryan
Jason,
Sewn footbox - two ways to do it. One creates a sewn through seam at the foot, one does not. I will try to explain the simpler of the two methods as its easier to grasp conceptually.

Yes, with some caveats. To make it worth your time you need to use cuben that has a .18 Mylar film. This comes with most weights of cuben above 1.0oz/yd. Using anything less than that will wear out...
Pretty sure Nobul came out of a spat between one of the owners of TiGoat and another fabric supplier. The names and details of some fabrics at both places needed to be updated at the time & that's...
Its the same tape that CubicTech sells so it will be strong enough for a tarp. I know of at least one cottage vendor that uses it in their shelters.
Ryan
Dyneema ripstop nylon is old news. Create a woven full Dyneema fabric in the 2-3oz range and you will destroy all. Might require $100k though.
Ryan
That's a characteristic of polyester. One of the things that irritates me about light, polyester hiking shirts.
Ryan
Easy way is to make a round "footbox plug" with the the same circumference as the bottom width of your quilt, put in a single horizontal baffle, and then sew it in. For example, if the bottom width...
Looks good! I think those tie outs will do the job fine. What was your final weight? .74oz cuben?
Ryan
Harsh windy weather. Giant 10'x15' silnylon tarp. I would definitely use some catenary curves if possible. That's a lot of real estate to flap around in the wind. If you're looking for several pitch...
Correction to my previous post - the 3M tapes start losing strength as they get closer to 0F, not freezing. Had a brain fart. So you would probably be OK there.
Ryan
Yep, I've seen that pic before. You can see they've got at least four layers of reinforcement patches, three of which are the wavy style and one circular patch. There's also another reinforcement...
Ripstop by the roll.com is about the cheapest I've found. Several colors too.
Ryan
I've not seen sailmakers use that technique personally, usually it's a mix of taping & sewing several layers with 3-4 different reinforcement designs. A lot of ways to skin a cat though. Post pics...
I've seen that done quite a few times. Yama Mtn Gear also does this(see link). Personally, seems like a waste of time compared to grosgrain or standard lightweight nylon webbing.
...
While that is true to an extent, the strongest tie outs are bonded and sewn. If you are really averse to sewing you could tape grosgrain onto each side of the tarp and then bond a cuben patch on both...
Fabric sold and funds received. Will get it out you on Monday. Thanks
Ryan
Hi everyone,
I was going to make a tarp using 7 yards of red SilArgon, but I've had a change of plans. So, I might as well pass it along to another MYOG'er who will use it. With shipping, I paid...
Report back after some use in the rain and let us know how water repellent the Argon is plz. I'm curious.
Ryan
What are people doing with their quilts where 30d nylon is required?? The same nylon used in tarps and tent floors. Give me the lightest nylon possible for quilts. I have hundreds of nights in 7d...
The international standard for classifying a tent fly as rainproof is 1500mm minimum. Most silnylons you can buy will be ~1,200mm which will handle most weather, but obviously not all considering...
