No time and labor in my calculation. I'm a tinkerer, not a TV watcher and I do my work while everybody's asleep. That's the definition of no cost to me. If you want to calculate T&L into it, buy...
Hammockgear.com will premeasure any increment down to one ounce. -and the prices are great to boot.

You can do it. I had the same or less experience than you describe when I built my first. It's cake, just takes more patience. I'd rate it no more difficult than a climashield quilt. Just takes...
Email HG and verify they don't have it. He may be out but he has had some issues where the site doesn't show but he's still selling.
Jbo
By all means, get it from StormCrow. He'll put it in individual bags for you. Easily worth an upcharge if there was one, but there isn't.
Jbo
Nice work. I made mine rectangular too. Saved time and effort and I have no complaints.

Honest question:
Other than who's wearing it, what makes it a kilt and not a skirt?
And don't your thighs chafe wearing those in summer?(or maybe I'm just delicate. :) )
Jbo
Good thinking. I like it.
Jbo
I'd use 3" in my calculation. Strictly speaking, your true loft will be limited to the baffle height but you'll benefit from overstuff.
Jbo
I seem to save around 50% if I don't ascribe a value to my time. That's easily justified because all my gear making is at night after everyone else is asleep. I miss no work and no visiting.
...
I think most are using rs nylon. Seems like maybe Rev uses poly.

Thanks, everybody. I had put it off for a while thinking it would be beyond my abilities but it was remarkably simple - just took patience. Now I've got to make one for my "model".
Jbo
Here's a down TQ I made for myself. My son is modeling it for me.
48"x65" with 2 inch baffles
12oz of StormCrow down
sewn footbox
OWF 0.9oz ripstop outer shell
OWF 0.9oz taffeta inner shell...
Had to go back and reread Youngblood's post to see whether or not I agreed.:D I do. Having seen a couple of different qualities of down, the primary difference is the amount of feathers. I'm...
Exactly, the higher fill power gives you more, but much smaller air pockets = increased insulation efficiency.
That is also why high quality ice cream generally won't melt as fast on the way home...
At some point(I don't know where.) this would be problematic because the higher fill power is so light weight that is compresses too easily to maintain the loft.
I just finished two down items...
I have to agree that 'higher fill power means bigger air pockets' is a gap in the original logic. If you look at a tiny feather vs comparable down, you'll see that the down has zillions of wisps...
Having done both, I won't choose to go back to attached. I find a drape or tube works just fine and is more flexible. The weight penalty is less than an ounce and it's far easier to get in and out...
Thanks for the helpful tips, everybody. Figured it out. The problem - I'm a bone head.
Don't know how many times I've done it right, but when I changed out the needle, I put it in backwards. ...
My store had one. Picked it up for my daughter.
Wish I'd gotten me one,but I've got one that weighs in at 6oz already. Picked it up for $2 at a local second hand store.

Good call on the 8ply test. Gonna get some new sharps and try that next weekend when I'm home again. Travelling for work this week. No DIY for me.

My machine works fine(Singer 403) doing a couple of layers of Momentum. But I'm trying to close the edges of a Top Quilt and it keeps breaking the top thread. A pleat on two hemmed seams makes 8(I...
Nice work. That's a cold hang.
Jbo
Just draped ove the ridge line works for. I would have bet it would never keep the bugs out but it does just fine - and I only have to lift it to get in and out.
Jbo
BTW Will be used with a 3.5" loft down UQ.
Jbo
Actual sewn baffle material is 2". Significantly overstuffed at about 30%. An ounce is cheap insurance to me.
Jbo
That's a good book answer, thanks. But I know people have good general ideas too based on their experiences. Looking for those as well.
My 20 degree assumption is based mostly on specs and fill...
I know. Pics. Will post some when I'm done. Just finished sewing baffles last night. Will order the down shortly.
Jbo
Almost done with a down TQ. Thought I'd solicit opinions on (roughly) how cold it will take me.
Specs:
Momentum shell
48" x 65" w/sewn footbox
2" baffles
12oz of 800+ down...
Caveat. If you want rectangular for multifunctionality, go for it.
Jbo
You want to dart. Relatively speaking, takes little more time. Literally speaking, it's no more difficult. But it's more efficient and a better fit. If you're going to invest the time and money...
My son is ten and his hammock is 3yds. He could certainly enjoy a shorter one but he doesn't want a smaller one.
Jbo
16-18" works well for me. Yep. Just below my knees.
Jbo
Just FYI. The BFF liner material at Hancock's makes a good soft, inexpensive liner for synthetic TQs. I've used it for a few. Feels much better against the skin than nylon. It's 100% polyester.
...
The taffeta has a much softer feel than the RS if that works for your project. I'm making TQs right now, so RS on the outer and taffeta for the inner.
Jbo
Also, if you're paying regular price at Hancocks, you can get fabric of known weights from OWF for the same price even with shipping.
Jbo
PS. Be sure to trim your dog's nails.
Hancocks is almost all 1.9 if it isn't water proof. I have used it many times. If the WW stuff isn't waterproof, it is most likely 1.9. As long as it isn't waterproof it is fine for a hammock.
...
Freehanding here too.
Jbo
No idea, but I did pick up a half yard of black for $1 last week to make a neck gaiter/balaclava and/or hat.
Jbo
What are the weights on those tarps?
Jbo
Good question. 48" which is wider than many.
That gives you a 75" diagonal. Works fine for me.
Jbo
If you are making it rectangular and lay diagonal rather than banana, full length is actually a little shorter than you are tall. I'm 68" tall and my DIY UQs made at 58" easily cover me head to toe....
Then plan to get there early and camp out. In Atl, your too late to get anything good if you aren't there several hours before opening.
Thanks. After noticing this, I've resolved to only pin under where I will sew.
Do pins come in multiple gauges? I need some thinner ones if they do.
Jbo
Going from 10% to 20% with 12oz of down is only an ounce of weight - cheap insurance for me, though I realize not for some.
Jbo
What about this part?
"I'm using some to make a down TQ and I've noticed that where I pin it, the holes don't "heal". When I've used 1.9oz and 1.7oz, after a while where you pin it, the fabric...
I recently finished an UQ with about 16% overstuff. It is ok but I'm going to go up to a little over 25% for the TQ I'm working on now. Not saying either of those is right just saying what I saw...
Hey, Marsh. We've gotten a little sidetracked from the original question(me included). I know you work with this stuff. What's your experience/opinion?
Thanks.
