Having had a full length and a 2/3 length under quilt. The weight and bulk in the pack is night and day.

I've been using the GG 1/4 " thin light pad cut down to my size. No complaints in 3 years.
The thinner version is good for the summer.

My last group outing in NY off of the AT there were 2 scout groups. One group was almost exclusively hammocks.
Also when I was hiking on the AT in CT there was another short section hiking group...

I started out with 5-9 miles per day. Lightened my pack and worked on a few muscle strengthening exercises and got up to 15-18 miles per day after about 2 years.

3 season should be fine. I've gotten my yeti and mamba down to 24*F. Got chilly past 28*F but there's ways around that by going to sleep with a hot water bottle and making sure you eat a good filling...
