In the ultra-cold like minus 20s onemust think in systems, not individual pieces of gear. Most people will try something and claim it doesnt work when the reality is that piece of gear was not paired...
I thought you wanted feedback. I must have been wrong. If the only feedback desired is that which sings praises I apologize. I have not burned out on the hobby, I am going justvas strong as before. I...
Yup!!
I am of the opinion that when those changes were made, and even the new WTT ideas, the "asking members for feedback" was more of basic editing as we can see on this thread. The rules,...
There are a lot of generalities tossed around by the "experts" here. All are true for those individuals, but none are true for everyone. Longer, wider, lighter, darker, younger, etc... are all...
You were ok.
The FLNF is managed by the USFS. There is no prohibition that I am aware of.
Most NYS parks are not managed by the DEC, but by tbe OPRHP (Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Places).
Welcome neighbor. For trails, this list http://www.stateparks.com/ny.html will get you started. The other major places are the FLT, Catskills, Adirondacks. There is also a lot of trails to your south...
The real question to ask them is, "Why is sleeping in a hammock an issue which requires prohibition?"
My first year in a hammock was using the rainfly from a eureka timberline tent. Worked quite well; plenty of coverage, even had "beaks". The only real downside was the weight. Some rainflys will work...
I find it easier to locate a good spot to hang in dense forest compared to ground dwellers. I can be above most of the stuff. Thorny bushes are an issue, I do avoid those. A stand of conifers only a...
Welcome. Happy hanging.
Sometimes us afficianados make the simple seem complex. In general, hammocks are very simple. Just a piece of fabric suspended between two trees. No more conplex than that. Of course we all like to...
Using straps and cinch buckles creates a built in break and drip line.
Welcome neighbor. Happy hanging.
Been saying this for years about using the bugnet year round. Good to know I am in in excellent company.
For the future, I would recommend the trails in the Sugar Hill State Forest, which include the FLT. Also those in the Finger Lakes National Forest, and the Bristol Hills branch of the FLT.
That is why it is called "fishing", and not "catching". ;)
Welcome. See you on the trail.
It sounds like you desire the pad to move. Others find this to be a disadvantage with the inflatables. I like the fact the ccf stays put. I also do not move around in my hammock. The static character...
Welcome. See you on the trail.
The pad needs to "fit" the hammock, else it bunches, creases, etc... The greater the sag, and use of diagonal lay significantly impacts this as well. Of the commercially available hammocks, some seem...
I do not have a snakeskin. I put my wet tarp in its bag, which then goes in the outside pocket of my pack. That is its usual place; wet or dry. Easy access.
Underquilt in the warmer temps. Pads in the ultracold (subzero).
Cant do that weekend, as I will be in the adks the weekend before, and the weekend after. You are welcome to join me for either/both.
I keep a steep pitch in winter to avoid snow load.
Thanks JmBoh for getting it! I was concerned that I was hitchhiking through the galaxy alone.
When I used a SBPro, I also did the ridgeline mod, I also used sticks in the loops to separate the bugnet like Claytor hammocks. Now I just use a claytor.
The answer is 42.
This is what I do all the time. I haven't carried stakes in years. If there isn't something to tie off to (usually there is), I push a stick into the ground as far as it will go. Note: Tie of...
Welcome. Everyone has their favorite setups, not everyone has the same. While there are many tarps and diy, cobbled together suspensions, etc... they all serve the same basic function and when you...
Have fun everyone. I will be in the Adirondacks. Happy Hanging!
Yep. Myself and another forum member are hiking in about 7 miles to a trout pond in the Adirondacks. Looks to be great weather. Here's hoping for some tight lines.
Blue... no green... Ahhhh
Welcome. See you on the trail.
Not that my opinion counts in any way, but I am not in favor of this. This site is not a buying/selling forum. The for sale section is there to be used within the guidelines of the tos, beyond that...
On my way back right now. Have two trips to plan for next month. Pm me if you want to tag along.

I don't like it. But not for strength issues. Mason line tangles too easily, catches on debris, tying/untying in inclement weather is difficult especially frozen lines. My go to is spyderline....
Mine stay attached to the hammock. The only time i ever remove the straps is if they are wet. The bulk is the same whether they are attached or not, the only difference is the volume is separated...
Marek, I love my expedition hammock. As far as rain fly, I use a different manufacturer. Tarps are generic, meaning they don't have compatability issues with hammocks made by someone different.
HC, I drive right past you everytime I head up there. If you ever want to join me/us on any adventure just send a msg. Every other weekend is about my average, check out my journal.
They don't really exist. Just a figment of our imagination.
I am up there all 4 seasons. Rarely will I post about an upcoming trip. If you are looking to head up, send me a pm. There is a 50% chance I have a trip the weekend you are looking.
I pitch my tarp high enough to stand under it. I use the hammock as a chair for ease of dressing/undressing not for modesty. My tarp is usually pitched wider than most for the larger footprint....
Have a routine and stick to it. In the extreme cold (and hot) cognitive functioning diminishes so "problem solving" and decision making will not be optimum. In some cases a bad decision could be...
Excactly! I spent an entire winter testing different combinations of gear in different conditions. That winter with temps from 20*F to -20*F showed me that is isn't item x, but how item x works (or...
Check out Clark hammocks for how they use a similar concept of pockets.
My dispute with Ss conclusion is that the temps he uses to are too warm for ccf. Vapor barriers require one to be cognizant of being too warm and generating sweat. Most condensation issues in my...
I use whatever saplings, roots and rocks are available to tie off to. In rare cases, I push a stick into the ground. Haven't carried tent stakes in years. Not a weight thing, but a more simplistic...
For double digit negatives, I use closed cell foam as my under insulation.
Mb190e, there is much much more to the Adirondacks than the high peaks.
