I also added these files to my blog if anyone has any trouble downloading from the forum. Several people have contacted me saying they couldn't download. Doesn't seem to be any problem here, so I...
I asked the moderator to add support for SketchUp files. Thanks Rick!
For anyone who doesn't know SketchUp is a free Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) program. It's super easy to learn and use. It was...
Well, I got up this morning and made a 3d model in SketchUp of the hammock stand. I can't currently attach it to a post, so if anyone is interested, send me a message and I'll email it to you. If I...
Many of the other stands I looked into on this forum when I was doing research for a stand, were based on being as light as possible or portable. I was looking to build something that was more sturdy...
Great project for the fourth! I just went and measured mine, it's 5'11" from the ground to the tip top. Hope all goes smoothly. You should be hanging in no time!

Looks cozy in there, don't it? Hope everyone remembered Mother's Day!
Can't beat it, a full belly, beautiful day, and a hammock to hang in! So thankful! And so about to fall into a turkey coma...42554
These are all good points, and there are some great ideas in this thread. I've been meaning to update the plans with some of this stuff, but I just can't seem to find the time. Hopefully I'll get a...
I don't remember if I mentioned this earlier or not, but I countersunk the bolt heads a little. This gave extra length and kept the bolt from sticking out so much (well at least on that side). 2x4's...
Looks good john_boy! You've got a nice little set up there. I like the angled cuts on the bottom 2x4's.
On a side note - I've been thinking about getting that same tarp. Looks to have good...
Is it wrong that I want to get in that hammock with that bear? That would be an extreme hang if ever there was one!
I don't have any experience with that type of hammock either, but I measured about halfway down the braces (where it looks like it would be most likely to be an issue) and there is 70" of clearance....
You could larks head your tree straps to the eyebolts, then use a toggle & marlin spike hitch to attach your whoopies. Or if your whoopies are long enough, you could use a carabiner to connect them...
I think she's got this hammock thing all figured out.

Just got one of these for fathers day. Seems to push the air around a good bit. I'll do a test outside later, supposed to be 95 here today.

I don't usually use a tarp on my stand because of the cover from the trees. I set a tarp up just to show one way of attaching it to the stand. I figured I'd go ahead and show a few more things while...
You can just tie your tarp straight to the uprights as if they were trees. Or use the eyebolts. I'll try to get a pic of my stand with the tarp up.
Wow! That's a great video! Nice idea about hanging two from the stand. I'll have to add the bolt measurements to the PDF when I get a chance. One more thing I noticed about putting the riser blocks...
Hope to see the pics soon Tritan, let us know how the double hang goes! I updated the PDF to show some of the refinements I've made and added a few more measurements.
I agree. I've been thinking about the feet being in constant contact with the ground as well. I think I'm going to put three smaller blocks under the feet to lift it up slightly. One in the middle,...
I've been using these on my own stand for over a month and haven't had any problems. I weigh around 240-250 and I hang from them everyday. I think that is a working load number, not a max load.
Those are the straps I use. I weigh around 240 and have had no problems at all. Having cut the cam-buckle off, I definitely believe they are the reason for the lower rating. They are cheap metal....
Ridiculously cute!
I'm using a ENO doublenest. Mine hangs at a nice height, as you can see in some of the original pictures. I think you should be able to put the eye bolts wherever you'd like without compromising...
The folding stand is one I looked at before building mine. Looks to me like that design works really well. Seems very easy and portable. My stand isn't portable. Moving it around the yard is one...
I added a wheel to make it easier to move the stand around the yard. Works great. I picked up a wheel from Harbor Freight, used a piece of scrap 2x8, some decking screws, and four lag screws. I think...
Looks great Primitive BowMaker! The extra length between the eyebolts gives you plenty of room for your tarp. Looks like it's going to last a very long time and be a great spot to hang/test your gear!
Looks great Nojack! I really like the vertical feet, stronger and won't deteriorate as quickly due to less wood being in direct contact with the ground. Glad I could inspire you. I was myself...
Sleeps Like a Burrito is my Native American name (I am a 1/32 Cherokee & 1/32 Black Foot). My trail name is Bayburrito. My parents are very proud! They think they have a little innovator on their...
Hello everybody! I'm new to this hammock thing and just want to introduce myself. My Mom and Dad turned me onto the hammock hanging lifestyle. I still have some of the more complicated things to...
When you walk into your bedroom, and completely overlooking your bed, say "These two walls would be perfect for me to hang my hammock!"
I detach one end from the tree strap, then lay the amsteel and rings in the hammock. Then I twist that half of the hammock (like ringing out a towel). Not tight, just enough to keep the ridgeline and...
looks great!
Thought I would add a few more pictures taken in daylight so anybody who wants to build one, might be able to see the details better.

I really like the idea of using the uprights as the diagonal braces in option one. Seems like that could be easier to build with fewer angles to worry about. But option two seems to give a bit more...
I'm currently 245 and had my 15-20 pound beagle in with me last night without any problem. I feel fairly confident that it could hold that much weight, probably more. The only place I see any...
I don't have any experience with spreader bar hammocks, but I would assume it will work. Maybe someone with more knowledge will answer that better for you. I can tell you it was easy to build. Like I...
I used 8 - 2'x4'x8' pressure treated. The bottom rails are 8'. The feet are 4'. the diagonal supports are 4'. The uprights measure 6' high from the ground. I used the cut offs from the four uprights...
Stopped by Home Depot on the way home tonight and bought some 2x4s to build my first hammock stand. Finished and did a test hang, and I'm pleased to report that it works beautifully! I know it was...
I've hung from a picnic table shelter before. Just make sure that the structure you want to hang from is in good condition! It needs to be strong in a lateral direction, most structures are built to...
Only have experience with the PL I ordered from Sportsman's Guide, which I believe is genuine. I have used it down to around 50 and was comfortable. I have woken up and thought it was a little...
I have the Hammock Bliss No-See-Um bug net and I'm happy with it. We found ours on sale and didn't have time to make DIY bug nets before we went on a trip. It is bulky and heavy, but seems well made....
We entered on the eastern side, at the Suwannee Canal. The Stephen Foster entrance is closer to the larger lakes.
Here are a few more shots from the swamp.

I used to go down when I was a boy scout. It is a great place! Really February to March is good (or the equivalent months in fall) because it can get hot in the summer. I mean HOT. Right now the bugs...
We saw everything from little babies, no more than a foot long, to BIG ones that had to be at least 12 feet! The farther we went in, the more skiddish they were. At night we could see several glowing...
The wife (who is 7 months pregnant) and I just got back from a trip down to the Okefenokee Swamp. It was great! We canoed out into the swamp and camped with the gators. The water level is low so many...
It's easy to forget that we're talking about something that averages 5 miles long and has been recorded at 118 miles long! If a lightning bolt can travel that kind of distance, why would anything...
I think this could be a great idea! You could have sections of netting along the bottom and some in the top of the foot and head sections for ventilation. That is if you closed the ends, of course....
