I know that it would be tough to know the quality of the down you were getting, but could you buy a bunch of down coats and stuff from a thrift store and use that down to make a TQ or UQ? I know at...

I didn't realize that stands could be so varied. Woah! Goodluck with the move and the hammock, BaloO.
It really is all relative, but it's easy to cut weight by simply being picky and reasonable about what you bring. I started slashing weight just by being smart about what I packed - making sure every...
+1 for garbage bag, although that was in my tenting days. Though it worked so well that I imagine it'll carry over.
So, 2012, huh? Oh my God, it looks stunning!
****, that's some stunning scenery! I really want to do this trip, maybe in the next summer or so. After I take an orienteering refresher, that is! Don't want your compass skills to be only so-so out...
I will look for it and read the thing this weekend! I spoke with a NFLDer today at work, and we were gabbing about the views. She said it's phenomenal, but tough, which is exactly what I like. Though...
Looks awesome! I often end up back at Green Pepper when I'm daydreaming about gear and DIY!
I know you were looking for already-made pots, but I started tinkering with alchy stoves a few years ago and the beer-can ones are easy and fun to make. I didn't have half the proper tools, and I...
Good question, I was thinking of doing this with a few summer-weight bags until I can save up or luck into some money or materials to make or buy my own TQ.
Great minds, as they say. Seriously though, there are some damned innovative concepts on this site. Sorta' mind-blowing! It's addictive!
Nice instructions! I'll have to poke around the army surplus stores this weekend and see what I turn up.
Woah, goodluck, that's intense! Can't wait to see the finished product...s.
This is exciting stuff! My first hammock just came, I'm planning this trip...good week so far (except for the rain). I'll definitely contact NB tourism, that sounds like a good start. I'll have to...
Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone here (Canadian or otherwise) has ever hiked the Fundy Footpath in New Brunswick? I'm hoping to get out there next spring/summer, but want to start planning. Any...
Welcome from Toronto and from another hammock newb (although I should be getting my WB in the mail today!)
I tend to lean towards the "better to be prepared" mentality, if for no other reason than I often end up in ridiculously improbable backcountry situations. I'm thinking either a 9x10 or a 10x11. I...
Sorry I missed it, though I'm still interested in diving into a winter hang!
Looks like a nice time, thanks for posting the video and for organizing everything, Brian!
So, I'm trying to figure out what size tarp I'll need. It's going to be covering a WBBB and I have a few requirements: I want the option of doing that fold over thing at the ends to make doors...
Dan - let me know if you decide to! I forgot that I have a breakfast date, but I'm still planning on checking it out.
@mbiraman: I think I just did exactly that! WBBB will be in the mail next week from the helpful dant8ro! Also, I had a look at your woodwork link - I'm actually thinking of getting into a...
Right back at ya', Dan! :)
For all Toronto/GTA/Ontario-based HF members, I wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow (the 23rd) MEC is having their twice-annual gear swap! It's free, and I know I'll be there poking around for...
If you can get someone here to help you out, that's ideal, but I know that MEC periodically does free shipping deals, especially around the holidays. But I don't know if that's Canada or North...
I am thinking about taking the plunge and buying a WBBB - some members of the forums suggested (and I think smartly) that if I end up not liking it (which seems unlikely) then I can easily sell it on...
Right now I'm trying to keep my eyes peeled for fabric sales and cost-effective materials. I don't get out to do much hiking in the winter months, so it gives me something to do. I know if I hold out...
@Sturgeon: I grew up in Elliot Lake but live in Toronto now. I try to get up as often as possible, and even up and around to Thunder Bay when time allows to visit family, although I always hate doing...
Thanks! Another excuse to think about hammocks, haha!
I have to read up on this vapour barrier thing. I understand it only in a really rudimentary way. But keep the hypothetical/dream gear ideas coming!
Hello all,
As the title suggests, I'm looking to buy a used but serviceable (read: no gaping holes or threadbare spots) Warbonnet Blackbird. I'm looking to save a few bucks and keep a good hammock...
@Cat: woah, I saw that the other day when I was browsing materials on that site, but to be honest didn't read the bit about heat reflection. That is definitely worth trying, especially because it's...
*sigh* one day, I hope to be getting a WBBB in the mail. For the time being, jealous!
So, I love thinking about hypothetical gear that could be made, and I wonder if anyone has ever sewn with emergency blankets/heat reflective material? I'm thinking something for winter hanging, maybe...
Ditto on all fronts - researching is half the fun, and what better way to get through the hard, long winter than trip planning and gear investigation (other than winter hiking, of course).
...
Hello and welcome! I'm new myself, and continue to be astounded by the outpouring of support here!
I sent a PM! It IS my birthday, so maybe this should be a write off, expense-wise, for me. A little treat to myself for surviving another year.
As someone who needs visuals, these videos have been great! I'm trying to source some fabric locally so I can get started fiddling and maybe come out with something resembling a hammock, haha!
...
@Shug: the velcro sure does look cozy, but for my uses would be unnecessary. I meant to ask you though, if you've ever done any hiking (winter or otherwise) in the Agawa canyon near Sault St. Marie?...
Are there any benefits to having the bug netting be a separate piece, other than of course being able to leave it at home for cold weather camping or places where bugs aren't as much an issue? I am...
Hey folks,
Just wondering if someone could tell me whether or not the Warbonnet Traveller comes with the bug net that I see in the photos on the website?
Thanks!
@bodhran4me: glad you caught that :D
@Brian: yeah, that's true - I think I'll just plan to buy my first tarp (whatever that ends up being because ****, are there ever options!) with the options of folding over the ends to close 'em off...
So maybe something like this, as an example? Except if it was DIY, maybe do cat cuts on the two longer sides, leaving the shorter ends straight so they can act as better doors?
...
True about the rectangular tarp, though to make that work (if I wanted doors at both sides) I'd have to get an extra long tarp to allow for folding/crossing the end pieces into doors? If I'm thinking...
I should first say that I haven't done much DIY other than a few silnylon stuff sacks and some pack modifications, but as I'm breaking into the hammocking world as someone who loves fiddling around...
@ olzeke: thanks so much for the offer, but I think I'd feel nervous in case something happened to your loaner en-route/over the border! But what an offer! This forum gives me the warm and fuzzies...
Wait a second, this isn't a forum for pestering pork? Oh geez, is my face red...
Yeah, I was trying to type on a friend's iPad, but it wasn't working so well with my sausage fingers (har...
What a warm welcome, and from so many geographies!
I am super excited to break into the ham mocking community, and I'll definitely keep an eye out for any trips getting planned here in Ontario. Of...
This might be a strange question, but I was wondering if anyone knew any places I could rent or borrow a WBBB or a HH from? I live in Toronto, Ontario, and have really been wanting to try hanging,...
I just finished my first loop of La Cloche in the last week or August. Beautiful loop, challenging but doable, like you said. I want to go again already, and was thinking about doing a couple night...
