Congrats you lucky dog.
At the site I will be at, there are loads of pine and aspen. If things get too much I will build a fire and huddle around it eating all night.
Have a thick neck gaiter that should work. Also a ThermaRest base camp pad if needed. I have a spot that has a thirty foot rock outcropping on one side and can move the truckto any of the other...
Yeah the big K i just bigger but using as a quilt with the shiftable down should increase the warmth.
You should definitely have some sort of pad/underquilt for cooler nights. After struggling with a pad a couple of nights, I went to an underquilt and haven't looked back.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention a 10 by 13 tarp. I figure if it is windy I can do the poor man's winter tarp configuration. BTW, thanks YB for the SF, it ROCKS!
I have done my homework and I am planning a day before Christmas Eve day hang at around 10,000+ feet in the Rockies west of Fort Collins where it may get to below zero over night. I am going by...
My wife and I were in the Rockies west of Fort Collins in Northern Colorado and a police officer drove up just outside our site and asked if we'd seen a white Cherokee. He said the driver was a 'bad...
8/20/2008: Bear's Essentials
It was a small bit but I was thrilled.
While watching Man vs. Wild when 'Bear' was in a jungle he made a bark hammock. Finally going mainstream!
The trick to setting a hook or screw is to drill a pilot hole the diameter of the post so the threads do the mechanical work. Here is a pic of me standing on a shelf held with 4 #8 2 and 3/8 screws....
While in the Scouts I loved orienteering. The chicken we roasted at the end was fantastic!
Check out the reviews on Ed Speer's Snugfit. I've been very cozy to 30'sF with the thirty degree model. It is easy to use and fit's perfectly on most hammocks. The cost/benefit is well worth it.
Oh, pooh. I didn't notice this thread until Labor Day. Waaaaaaaaahhhhh!
My Wife, two dogs and I spent a lovely extended weekend in the Rockies west of Fort Collins, Colorado at about 8000'. Highs in the seventies, lows in the forties. Was comfy in my Skeeter Beeter...
Here in Colorado some people winter camp the Rockies by snowshoeing while pulling a toboggan behind them to haul their gear. If I did that I would love a reindeer skin to wrap myself in while...
I put down one but it depends on the price. If good enough, I might get two.
One night, think it was January, I was soloing for a weekend with my telescope on the AT in Massachusetts in a lean-to for a look at the winter skies. About 01:00 I awaken to a noise right by my...
Apparently the key with Spectra is two or in your case, three loops so as to not deform the line. I will try both.
Wow, you guys are fast. Didn't leave for but a minute and, zoom, you are on it! Thanks.
OK, so I am getting lazy.:( Went to the net and found it is a double fisherman's knot. Ignore me, but someone may find this useful so I will leave the post.
As in two half hitches backed up with a grapevine. Supposed to be a good knot to tie Spectra through and eyelet. Checked Grogs site and 'no joy'.

Was away hanging again this weekend and I am also a newb but let me throw my .02 cents in. First, I spent many years riding the iron all over the country. Second, I just got into hammocks. Third,...
I looked around and found no guidelines as to what is acceptable to post here. Perhaps some guidelines as to acceptable language, flaming, politics, etc. would solve the problem? I also agree that...
Interested, certainly! Where we talking about?
I keep telling people its the new way of camping. Everyone I put in the hammock has been positive. The three people I put in one this weekend remarked "I get sleepy in it."
I'm dying to get a snug fit, just have to wait for $$$$.
These are a few views 50' from our site.
Got one for the wife and one for the brother-in-law. Thank you CHO!
Here's my first wilderness report. Went with three ground dwellers to Pleasant Valley in the Rockies, a bit above 9000 feet. Daytime temps were low 70's though it felt much warmer in the sun. ...
Preacherman, I love latakia blends and am thinking a windcap on the pipe would solve any potential problems.
NCP, I ordered a Cabela's double, seemed like a good place to start. Apparently comes with straps unlike the ENO and less expensive-seems like a good place to start. If things work out, there are...
Disc, both shoulders, arthritic all over from injuries, muscle wasting on one leg, even a penetrating wound into my body cavity about a year ago...that cold hard ground sure brings on the achey...
LOL!!! Me too, no more damage. Seriously, I will start stringing not far off the ground-just in case!
I've been lurking here a while and decided to give it a go and, gosh, am I excited.
Let me introduce myself. Grew up back east, loved the AT but as I've grown older those accidents and...
