If this will be your only tarp, the 12 will give you more options. Yes, you could get by with the 9, in moderate weather. If you get a driving rain or high wind, there will be no way to close off...
I have the Noah 12 as well. Love the tarp. I bought it on sale and paid $50. Go with the 12, you'll be glad you did.
