Was up at Frog Lake this weekend. There is plenty of snow! I even saw a guy with a pulk...
Here's a pic from the snowshoe on the PCT side to lower twin lake showing the current conditions:

I vote that we wait for the snow.
Looking at the historical data (although who knows how much bearing that will have in the near future...), the peak snow depth on Mt. Hood is at the end of March....
Bigfanboy spotted this little guy next to the second fire pit. It's hard to tell from the picture, but mouse was smaller than my thumb. He didn't seem to be afraid of humans at all and was just...

Bring water. There's also a general store just up the road if you don't mind paying a premium.
Don't let that stop you. There's still time to make yourself a DIY gathered end from taffeta tablecloth or ripstop nylon from Joanne's or what have you. You could also head to a REI and pick up an...
Hey Gary, what's the fire situation going to be up there this year?

I love waking up at noon and hearing all these fun stories about things that happened at o'dark'thirty. ;-)
I've been wanting to try that (pole mod). Where'd you get the pole?
Can't wait!

There's no water until you get to the creek (~3 miles), which is where we're camping.
That needle is too big. Like 5th, I also use an old guitar string (G, I think). Works great for mason line, dynaglide, amsteel, everything.
Say 'rad' one more time...
You're just confirming what I have previously stated, that the only reason to buy an expensive tarp is to reduce weight, so I'm not really sure where we differ here. Except for the fact that you seem...
Well, you have to consider the opportunity cost here. For the price of 1 cuben fiber tarp, I could by 20 PU coated nylon tarps. 20. That's beyond a lifetime supply. I've been using the same one for 4...
It's not just poly tarps vs silnylon. PU coated nylon is waaay cheaper than silnylon, materialwise. It even makes better performing tarp material (no spray through, doesn't stretch as much, lasts...
The shipping is going to cost more than buying a new one from amazon...
It's all about weight. The $20 12'x12' Guide Gear tarp works just fine, and that's what I use primarily. But it weighs 2lbs. I could spend $100 more on a tarp, but that would only shave off less than...
Well, I don't have much to add to the trip report, since I spent most of the time snoozing in my hammock, but I did have a lot of fun seeing everyone again and meeting all the new people.
While I...
Too bad! You should consider coming to the Oregon Summer hang in a few months though.
Looks like there will be showers, so everyone should bring a tarp, even if it's a wally-world special.
Braided mason line works fine for guylines. Micro-paracord tangles a bit less, but it's pretty spendy in comparison.
But one point I'd like to make is that if you camp in snow, you want a strong...
Looks a lot harder to replace when the whoopies wear out (which they do) than the traditional larks heads method.
First, I have to admit, I don't really understand the setup you describe. But to answer the simple question, "Why don't people attach their tarp to their hammock suspension instead of directly to the...
Another point is that tree straps completely encircle the trunk--which with thinner line would risk girdling the tree and killing it. Tarp lines, while they do cause far less pressure, are usually...
I don't see what's dude-centric about earth tones. I mean we're not talking wedding decorations here, we're talking camping. Anyway, Eno, Ticket to the Moon and many other brands have brighter...
The loop is just big enough to feed the free end through. So, 1". I think the main reason they're lighter is because they're polyester and quite thin. They're the lightest per foot I've been able to...
I don't know as I've never used dutch clips. (I use a marlinspike hitch over an aluminum toggle--no sharp edges). The HF webbing is 1" wide, FWIW.
Don't know where you got those things, but these 1200 lbs. harbor freight tie downs work great. I've been using them for years. They're much lighter than AE's straps etc. If you bend the hook in a...
Compression sacks have the following cons:
1. They weigh more than a stuff sack
2. They don't really compress stuff all that much
3. They leave you with a hard, roughly tube shaped object
4....
Count Sarah and I in.
FWIW, I'm 6'5" and I use a 3/4 underquilt. I just have to put a piece of foam pad in the footbox of my top quilt. 3/4 length quilts are a trade off. You're trading weight for hassle. A full length...
I think you've got the idea. At your weight you can basically get away with a hammock made of the lightest materials available (0.9, 1.0oz per yard maybe). Get a single layer, and as small as you can...
Count me in. I've been looking forward to going back to Drift Creek!
Just chiming in because I noticed a lot of people talking about having to stand up to change bottoms. FYI, you don't have to stand up, and even a very minimal tarp is required for privacy. To change...
FWIW, I'm around 230 lbs and I've hung for years on the same strand of 7/64th amsteel woopies, often with a passenger. I think you're underestimating the strength of amsteel.
You know, it's funny, I''ve been banned from many forums. In fact, I think hammockforums is the only forum that I've never been banned from. Of course, bans are inacted by moderators. I never put...
I can see absolutely no advantage to doing that.
Interesting, I'll have to try that. Yeah, they're definitely boarderline human proof too. I use a BIC lighter to open mine, but it's still tough--especially when it's below freezing out.
Really no matter what kind of critter it is, you're not likely to even notice it was there until you wake up to find the contents of your pack scattered, food bag shredded etc.
Most important...
Boy is it! Almost need snowshoes to get to the diner in Portland right now.
You don't treat silnylon with anything. You deal with the mist in a downpoor by hanging the tarp high enough. PU coated tarps don't mist as much, but they weigh more.
Thanks guys. I ended up ordering a hammock gear 20 degree new. All set now.
