my brother and i did LF this past memorial day, it was a beautiful walk in the woods, the open camping areas at Laurel Fork are the highlight. you were less than an hours...
It will be a drive, but i suggest you park at Massey Gap in Grayson Highlands State Park and take the wilburn ridge trail up to the main junction where the state park ends/Mt Rodgers recreation area...

safest place to leave a car is grayson highlands state park's backpackers lot in Massey Gap. puts you right up close to the crest zone too
You will find plenty of trees to hang from.
I did a week with Konnarock Crew last summer for the brier ridge rehab and found a spot about two tenths of a mile N of Thomas Knob at a large group...

Here in the mid atlantic, i am subjected to trips based on the time i have and the time of year for said trips. if its a short trip in warmer months, we hit up GWNF or a short jaunt off the AT in SNP...
you need to make that drive, or if you dont have the time, check out the Dolly sods area in Monongahela NF
St Mary's Wilderness is also in the Staunton area, rugged and very beautiful...lots of great places to hang. also, the Goshen Pass area is very nice too.
you should check out sky meadows state park--it has an easy hike to the backcountry sites, and its close to your neck of the woods.
