If you lay the fabric out flat in the hole and perpendicular to you guy line they hold even better... takes a bigger/deeper hole but they'll be rock solid.
I love those things.

I was in Russia 3yrs ago this week and we saw -50C... fit for neither man nor beast.
Snake skins for tarp, seriously considering popping a hole in a stuf sack to try that out for the hammock.
I found the skins no help for the hammock and made for an awkward pack.
As another...
Anyone have experience with a 'something' between layers and an UQ underneath? I am basically trying to talk myself into a new hammock instead of a new UQ to get colder weather options... so forget...
So I am considering options to expand the temperature range of my gear... does anyone have experience adding a pad between the layers of a DL hammock with an UQ?
Try the pad inside the bag with you... If there is room in your bag I found that was better for me. Getting in is like riding a bike (easy if you can do it but seems impossible when you yet cannot)....
I'm in Raleigh... I wouldn't expect skeeters up there in mid November, but it's more about the prevailing weather and location in my experience. I don't know that section of the AT, keep in mind...
I got my son out of bed and drove out to Jordan Lake. Between 2 and 4 in the morning we saw a couple dozen two or three were pretty impressive. Best part of it was dude time with my boy...
+1 on pads under sleeping bag... not as comfy as an under quilt but worked fine for me for a full year. I did find that cutting a couple of cheap foam pads short and laying them in the hammock...
I would Shop your surgeon, Ask about a "mobile bearing" implant... Different mechanics. Ask if the Dr. uses a navigation system... just to hear their opinion on it.
Hips are easier than knees...
+1 on the parachute style anchors... REI, maybe Campmor, or you can make them if you're handy. Trick is to lay them in the whole flat & perpendicular to the line. It is amazing how much force it...
As I think about it, it is really about comfort for me...
1. getting a great nights sleep
2. easier to find a campsite
3. cooler in the heat
4. warmer in the cold
5. less weight for dry and...
+1 on the timeouts... Then there is this http://www.madtree.fi/napsack.html cold weather option
The 'tent line kit' has the plastic ones I do believe... $10 for four pack from many retailers... I prefer the aluminum ones myself, much stronger and more durable. I love those little things!
As soon as I saw this, I thought... spreader bar would make it work with two hang points. Then there is the pic with one in use. Voila.
Removing any chance to have a draft between quilt and...
A suggestion that helped me separate the wheat from the chaff in my pack - write down everything you bring. Cary along an empty stuff sack or garbage bag, whatever you actually use goes in there. ...
I had my son in his own hammock at 8yrs old... He was already pretty comfortable in the woods. It was actually easier for him to stay warm in a bag with ccf pad under him. Go figure. After plenty...
I use webbing only... so no whoopie slings or the like. I have Dutch clips and tri-glides are the adjustment. The clips let this work without taking the webbing all the way out every setup. All...
I use snake skins so the fig 9's are not stuffed in w/ the tarp... Never got anything torn up by them though... So I am surely jinxed now.
I went to thinking about this (only thing more frightening to utter is 'hey, watch this')... Have you considered seam seal? Rather than trying to get the baffles and stitches all lined up, I would...
I can't sew worth a darn, but with a little seam grip one can fix just about anything. There are other brands... I have used whatever was at the local hardware store as well to good effect. It...

Hope that helps
My son is a Webelo - you will look back at the tent and wonder how it is hammocks aren't the norm. I can't imagine my boy pitching the last free standing tent I bought (and it is a nice tent too) by...
If the weather is fair, my tarp is usually in a snakeskin near the hammock RL. I prefer the open, only pitch the tarp out if I get chilled or figure on rain - either of those situations I like the...
No doubt it is weird drifting off to sleep while suspended in the air. The suspension also makes some popping noises... knots pulling tight, rubbing as it moves on hardware, rope stretching, and all...
Thanks for posting! I am getting ready to play with some splicing, nice to learn the easy way. Also, I found myself setting on the ground a time or two dinking around with rings and webbing (them...
The old sheet bend... that is a very sound knot so seems reasonable, but I don't think I could sleep for constantly wondering if it was slipping. Maybe you could tie a stopper knot in the fabric?
...
My son is 9 - loves his hammock. I got in this whole thing after he and I spent a few hours in the dark scouting for a place to pitch the tent on the AT... made the first of a three night trip...
I use Triptease... lights up great from any source. You do have to have the light beam more or less in line with your line of sight to the line (it only reflects straight back to the light source,...
You can't have families without lies. Or is it happy families end with lies. I can never keep that straight... so I err on the side of caution and avoid deception.
Big plus on itinerary and...
I am 99.44% sure there is nothing at the NPS park but a few bushes. Been there a few times and don't recall a tree in sight. If you look on Google Earth or the like the NPS campsites are NE of town...
...and that is rather the point! I got my real introduction to 'cottage industry' through this forum and it is really pretty cool that actual people actually made some of my favorite gear for me.
...
I found that the only really comfortable way to use a pad was in the bag... Of course that wasn't foam. UQ saves a lot of pack room and doesn't give that tight mummy wrap feeling.
Anyone try one line for the rl and whoopies? I am thinking one long piece of amsteel with say clove hitches attaching to the hammock and the running end burrying into the line just a bit past the...
Piedmont & western NC heat, humidity, and often dead still unless your at some elevation - even with nothing but mesh overhead I have spent some miserable nights in a tent. Could be just my...

I am the proud owner of two each summer weight burrows and Incubators. Only a short season of use, but have yet to see a feather fly (opposed to other down gear from the 'big time' manufacturers). ...
Best wishes is all I can say.
A 3 day walk on the AT with my main trail partner and now 8yr old son is what brought me here... so as to gear hammock is the only way I would go. Plenty of trees on...
cratspeople, craftspeople, whatever.
I have several pieces from Hammockgear... Stormcrow was very helpful in advising me on products before I ordered... the gear I have has been put to good use and I can honestly say it is far better...

Most webbing locks you find are intended to cinch down a sleeping bag or the like.. these are cut from thick aluminum. I have used them many times, with...
DUDE - your support pole is in the fire!
Glad it isn't just me sleeping in the backyard with a spouse considering calling the men in white coats.
It can seem pretty quickly overwhelming with all the technical specificifiations on this site... but I can say from personal experience it is worth it. I love hiking with my son and hammockoning is...

well except how about them Packers eh?
I am in NC and took a similar decision. I did get a full length UQ though to maximize the adjustability for the shoulder seasons. I haven't really tested the cold in the UQ out to see how far I can...
I use Triptease for guylines and the ridge of my tarp, and it does flash like neon when you hit it with a flashlight. It is something I think you will love or hate because it can't be ignored. It...
So I came back to sleeping outside on purpose after my son was born. We were car camping when he was three, progressed on to lighter and lighter loads of stuff needed to be in the woods comfortably...
