It's like herding cats...
I finally have weekends off and can go to a winter hang.....but I think February is really tempting fate even if this winter weather stays the way it is...January has MLK day weekend too, which might...
I second the Polebridge recommendation....mmmmmm.....bearclaws....pastries....mmmmmm...and while you are out there, head up to either Bowman or Kintla Lake for camping and some hiking. Plenty of...
Have fun! Can't make it due to new job/work schedule.
I'm going to Kaua'i at the end of December. I was planning to hammock on the Kalalau Trail. Seems like there will be plenty of trees.
Well if it wasn't a four to five hour drive from Portland, I'd consider it. Too far to drive for one night. :(
New job, new schedule mean it's a no-go for me...I have a Tue-Sat schedule....and I can't get that far before dark on the Saturday of the hang. Have fun!
Wine tasting in the Salem area with a day hike later? Good luck with that! :) You could spend a whole day tasting wine...and if you want to do Opal Creek, that's a bit of a stretch to do wine...
Nice try bigfoot!!!! Anyone in the Portland area can hear me talk about the Camino at Next Adventure two times a year...once in spring and once in fall...and it's not a backwoods kind of...
The Hoh Rainforest is the only true rainforest out here and it is spectactular! In Oregon, you'll find some nice old growth though and I definitely recommend if you check out the Wilson River Trail...
Someone correct me here...but I think the Benson Bridge is still out at Multnomah Falls (might be fixed by September, who knows), so you might not be able to do the Multnomah Falls/Wahkeena Loop. ...
I'll need to wait to find out what my new work schedule is with my new job...also, how are you getting around the 12 person limit in the wilderness area?
Sounds fun...if I can get the time off from my new job, I might be able to make it...
You can camp at any of the CGs even if they're not "open". I did it last year around this time.
Starting a new job...not sure of what my work schedule would be yet...if I am free and not sick (which seems to be the two reasons I have missed the last few hangs), I would love to see your coast...
Blogger is not an ideal platform for blogging...I strongly suggest using either WordPress or Tumblr (I have a website on WordPress and one using Squarespace)...I used Blogger for the first five years...
Nice! Super cool thing to do.
No, those are more around the laws regarding mental health and sexual assault. If you want solid info you need to look at governing bodies for the info you seek. In California, a minor is allowed...
What I am saying is you need to find out what the laws are in California. Some states allow you to consent for treatment at age 14. I'm not going to do the research for ya...use Google. :)
...
This is incorrect. Each state has an age of consent for treatment in a hospital. I'm not sure what California's laws are, but my guess would be if you are 16 y.o. or older, you could be treated...
Wolfman, I believe there are stops at East Glacier and West Glacier on Amtrak. I might be wrong. I am so excited for you!
I live in OR...have hung all over WA, OR and MT and my 8ft straps work just fine. I have actually been thinking of going shorter with 6ft ones...4ft are definitely too short...
I'm in Big Sky right now...and it's going to dump about a foot or two of snow in the next 24 hours according to the barista I was just talking to. Hoping our drive back to Missoula today is not too...
Well, for sure, if you are in Portland let me know. I'm sure we can get some local hangers to come out for a drink or two. :) I am planning a North Cascades trip for sometime this summer too. And...
You should try to connect with Barefoot Jake...he practically owns the ONP! :) Not a hanger but he's a cool dude. www.barefootjake.com
If I know when you're going to be in the area, I might...
I hung near/in the campsite usually.
I set my hammock up with whoopie slings the other day and put it up in the back yard before it started to rain...I think this might replace my HH Hyperlite...still have to put everything on the scale...
I did part of that trail in 2012 before I started hanging. That trail is the perfect trail for hangers as there are campsites few and far between the trailhead campsites.
I'm doing the Rogue River Trail over Easter weekend with my meetup group. We are keeping it small at 6 people and doing the whole trail in 3 days.
I go with earth tones personally...I like to blend when I am in the woods, so nothing too bright...all of my hammocks are either forest green, grey or dark blue. I do have a bright blue spinnaker...
Yeah I hear backpackinglight got "Crittered"...I think he got banned from NWHikers.net or decided to leave after stirring up crap over there. :)
I like this forum. Pretty friendly for the most...
Got my order today! Haven't put it on the scale yet, but I was really impressed with the quality.
I found that with my budget of 30 Euros/day, I was able to have plenty of fun, and treat myself occasionally to a private room. It all evened out eventually. That is the most I could see myself...
I would suggest trying DuoLingo instead. It's free, available as an app and online and it's awesome! I learned quickly how to say "Cafe con leche grande por favor!" :)
Spanish is a good idea to...
Will do. Thought I'd ask here first. Since we have so many gram weenies. ;)
I just ordered a SL Streamliner yesterday and it's already on it's way to me! Cool. Can't wait to check it out. Trying to lighten my kit.
Oh, and p.s. If you can't get permits for GNP in the backcountry, go check out "The Bob" aka the Bob Marshall Wilderness. No one goes there. It's close to GNP and has lots of bears and other...
Hey if any of you are in the OR/SW WA area, I posted this in the Northwest thread. ALDA-West is hosting a Ruck for future thru-hikers. Lots of good info will be shared.

I'm sure you've already looked at this link but this has all the info you'll need for your visit if you want to go into the backcountry.
Just did GNP last summer in August. We did the Bowman-Kintla Loop. We did walk-up permits. I will NEVER do that again. It was a pain in the butt and the rangers were less than helpful.
Bear...
I'm looking at at the Mosquito Defender net and there's no weight. Anyone have this info? Just curious. The Nexus Net is 5.75 oz. Not bad!
I know there are some people thinking of doing some thru-hiking or long distance backpacking in the coming year. ALDA-West (American Long Distance Assoc) is hosting a ruck in Cascade Locks on...
Hey Nuttysquirrel, I haven't met you yet, but I'm an Oregon hanger too. I'm also getting ready to help out with the ALDA-West Ruck on February 22 in Cascade Locks. Check it out...
I am doing the Camino Norte in early 2016 and I will most likely bring camping gear (still not sure about the hammock at this point) because the distances between albergues is a lot farther...more...
I've walked twice. Feel free to PM me with questions. Fozzie's blog is also a good resource if you want to camp. For me, it's albergues all the way. The Camino is a walk. It's not a contest or an...
If you're looking for an app (if you're taking a cell phone) to help you track your expenses, Trail Wallet is great. It's designed for international travelers, but I think it would work great for a...
I will hopefully have a whole bunch of posts on my Portugal trip up on the blog later this month. Definitely spend some time in Lisbon and Porto. I adore Portugal. Their coastline is amazing. Eat...
If you're in Portland, I will be giving a talk on 2.25.14 at Next Adventure (corner of SE Stark and Grand) at 7p on my 240km walk along the coast of Portugal and inland Spain on the Camino...
