    You wouldn't have to use really thin stuff, but...

    You wouldn't have to use really thin stuff, but something much thinner than what is being used now. Then just go from the exiting rope to the rings with the thinner cord.

    I think that both those hammocks use nylon straps...

    I think that both those hammocks use nylon straps which are prone to stretching.
