When im hammock camping i use a sleeping bag as a top quilt. sometimes its really frustrating cause it slides all over the place and zipping up in it can be uncomfortable in the hammock...

Tinny from Minibulldesign did a tent from a blue tarp. Its the hasty hooch videos. In it he cuts a tarp up so that would probably have your answer.
Gossamer gear has some great pads for not a lot of $$

Sweet setup is that a Superfly tarp I see if so that would be almost exactly like my setup.
just find another tree man =) Really though i would say about 20 feet. to go around and then to have some length to adjust.
