I would say to get all your gear earlier than you think you need it. When buying from cottage vendors, don't wait until a week before "the big trip" and expect a custom item to be on your doorstep in...
Bears, mice and other critters are used to poor camp practices along a lot of the AT. It is best to hang that food bag, every time, all the time.
Don't feel bad. They are not a "cure all" and not for everybody despite the consensus here.
Do what suits you best.
Welcome from another WI hanger. I'm along the lake by Manitowoc.
I spend lots of time in Kettle Moraine North on the IAT.
She along with a few others like myself, got into it quite a while ago. long before hammocks were mainstream. She was more into pushing the limits while some of us others got frustrated in the cold....
I agree. Even way back in the day, when you could get "Marlboro Miles" on a pack of smokes, they were giving away red HH's that were great to pick up on ebay really cheap. My buddy got two of them at...
Being it was in the backyard, it's fun to just play. Had I been out for real, I would have had the luxury of my pulk to pull behind me on snowshoes with more proper gear I'd actually be out with.. I...

Backyard hang. -16* with a wind chill of -47*
-I used my WBBB DL 1.7
-HG 0* UQ with a 1oz. overstuff...
Welcome from WI and NE PA as well.
Hayward is too far a drive for the time I'll have out in the woods. I have zero vacation time built up at this new job. It sucks and really has me picking and choosing what I can do and when.
In ...
The law wouldn't be so specific anyway as to "hammocks". There might be laws in the city parks as to "harming trees in or on public lands" and that would be for the city arborist to decide. I believe...
I would bet that you wouldn't be bothered. After all, it's not like you'd be camped out overnight.
It looks like I may have two of the three days open and I really need to get out and try my new backpacking recipe for salmon crab cakes.
Looked at the areas. Keep me updated, please.
Another NE WI guy here just south of you guys.
Welcome!
I'll be staying updated on this hang. Maybe I can make it.
Newport State Park in Door County has got great walk in sites along the lake.
Welcome. I do a lot of quick solo overnighters in Kettle Moraine North myself, being busy also. There's places to get out with limited time if you look hard enough.
My son and I were backpacking Pic Rox this past weekend and I didn't think the skeets were all that bad considering other years. However, it will heat up this week and they will get rough.
The...
I'm about an hour north of KMN. I spend a lot of time hiking around in there.
Welcome. Quite a few folks lately from WI joining this site. Whereabouts in the state are you from?
That's a fun trip.:)
Awesome time! Give me a shout if you ever want to hike the area again.
Thanks TW for putting this together!
I was thinking about night hiking it in from a closer point, but with work, I didn't want to roll into camp and disturb anyone at 1am. I should be rolling past Shelter #5 by 10;30 am tomorrow.
...
It's cool, I'm too ugly for him and could probably beat him up anyway.
I think you need an experienced backpacker to go to your house and plan out your gear with you. Take what you need for conditions, weather and duration, a comfort thing or two and leave the rest...
If I come alone (which I think i will be), I will be hiking in at 7-8am and will catch up. I would imagine you would bust camp at 8-10 as normal and I can rock at a better than 3mph pace.
Saturday...
It might be a good thing (if you have one) to bring a small lightweight folding camp stool. Shelter 5 can have firewood walked in but Shelter 4 is too far from parking, this leaves you to find some...
Another nice abbreviated hike option to get to Shelter 5, for a little longer hike is parking at the Group Campground along Kettle Moraine Drive. The trail starts there at the left of the entrance...
Great parking by shelter 5 with a short easy hike to the parking lot. The hike from 5 to 4 is easy too.
I will meet up with you guys Saturday afternoon at Shelter 4 for the night. I'm hiking in the 11 miles from Rt 23.
I still have a house in the Poconos and went to school at Keystone. :)
Two great hangs happening at two different places. Always great to have options like this. I wish I could make both.
Nice! The more the better. :D
Welcome from Manitowoc.
Been hanging for 11 years. Give me a shout if you have any questions.
There's another hang closer to you on the weekend of the 27th of this month at KMN with shelters. That might be a good option for you. Look for the WI spring hang thread if this hang won't fit your...
I would love to get the dimensions and specs on that DIY rig for the wife and I. We both lounge in the ENO doublenest (we're within the rating) on occasion but would like something just a hair bigger.
I have quality down sleeping bags that:
1. Cost less than a topquilt
2. Weigh the same or less
3. Have more versatility being a full featured bag
I've been at this a long time. I have enough gear to tailor my load to the trip.
Because I backpack and paddle all over, the gear varies from backpacking trips in the spring and fall weekends with...
I'm not really voting for a preference as I would only maybe join up with you guys for a one night deal due to work, and that's a big maybe.
I was just adding insight into what the trail is like...
Well, you can't always tell when storms will roll up on you and develop suddenly sometimes. It's happened to me a few times. I'm talking real severe stuff that turned into strong cells with tornado...
I'm in!
My buddy showed me the useful applications of these on an 8 day wilderness paddling trip this past year. I thought they were really cool.
Thanks!
The one site is right across the dam from where you park at Dam Road for the access. It's the Lumberjack Trail and is a nice wide rolling hike that could link up to other trails in the area.
My buddy and I have been doing wilderness trips together for 26 years. We range from a week to 2 week long trips.
Seeing that planning is half the fun as well as the anticipation and the fact that...
Hammocks are not a "cure all". The fact is, some people just don't like them for various reasons. It's best if you can try one out or just one in your group try it and let the others do a few...
Welcome from Manitowoc.
If not too far, I might be able to join up for one evening. I work until 11pm on Fridays. It really screws up my weekends.
Welcome from Manitowoc.
TF is a great place. I go at least once if not twice a year. It sounds like you get out quite a bit.
