I've not used silpoly, but when I make my silnylon tarps I only see the reinforcements. I also use a different material - 1.9 oz ripstop (hammock material) for strength.

Hemming like you're talking about would definitely cause wrinkles and therefore issues with the structure of the tarp. If you don't want to work out an actual catenary curve, you're still better off...
I use the same stuff for stuff sacks, tarp, etc. - 1.1 oz sil. When I make new kits soon I'm going to take silpoly for a spin. I like the idea of superior characteristics for no extra cost.

FWIW I use silnylon, no seam sealing, for my Me-Sacks and have never had an issue. You get enough air through the seams and drawstring hole to make it compressible.
Also FWIW, I've had my pack...
Figure 8 follow-through or on a bight. I only trust climbing knots for hammocks.
I'll be there around four. I'll find a place to hang, no worries.

Well I guess technically the bag is named after me... but yeah, that's me. Uwharrie was my old stomping ground back in the first days of HF... that's where I went to test gear, or just for a quick...
I'm coming. I don't care about soot or weather. I'll hike the two miles down to the creek campsite if I need to.
I just like to be outside. I'm not bothered much by conditions.

Necessary? Hmm.. is a pack cover necessary? No, but it's indescribably advantageous.

That is just plain ingenious! Talk about recycling, geesh! Nice going!

Just the coffee, yeah. Evidently bears don't like caffeine.
Mine is an all in one too. You can also carry water in it. A la Just Jeff.

I made a gear hammock. It doesn't hang from my ridgeline, it has its own suspension and hangs next to me. Works great, especially on those cold mornings when I want my coffee before I get out of...
Just to clear things up, I don't keep my hammock attached to my tree straps. I attach the straps to the tree, then run them through my buckles to attach them to my hammock. Breaking down is the...
I don't own a bridge hammock, but I have tried them before. I find my hammocks more comfortable, so I don't see putting effort into making/using one.

Round bags are easy to calculate... where's the cat curve measurements? : )

That's similar to the way Dutch winds his buckles. I've tried winding like that... it's definitely simpler and quicker, but the issue is the two cord ends exiting the buckle on opposite sides. In my...
Yeah, a prusik is just an extended larkshead.

I've got a series of pics posted here showing how to tie that, if it helps.

Here ya go.
Unless of course you pay any attention to politics.

Hey, HYOH man. I just posted what I do with MY setup and MY thoughts behind why. Bottom line, I don't like getting dumped on my butt. Been there enough times already.
For every instance of...
I'm in the process of reconstructing a proper catenary spreadsheet. It won't follow the instructions exactly (I don't remember how lvleph did all his formatting on the original), but it will give...
I went through this exact thought process when I first considered using the CC buckles (I was among the first to do so, so there wasn't a lot of field testing to fall back on).
There are a couple...
I just had my own very disappointing experience with the Hennessy Supershelter under pad. Froze my butt off at 45F, and I'm a warm sleeper. Won't be making that mistake again. Underquilts all the...
Definitely have someone help you adjust your UQ. Preferably someone who doesn't mind touching your butt (you'll see lol). It's nearly impossible to do it properly yourself.
As for earlier.. I...
I've used basic CCF (from a Walmart sleep pad) strap inserts on both packs I've made. One pack has a hip belt, the other doesn't. In both cases, it's plenty padding for me.
One other thing. I...
Rest assured that the hole is still within the seam allowance, well hidden. I know how you are about appearances. : )

"Meet with my satisfaction". Lol. I'm not the sewing machine master here.
The only thing I might change is the placement of the grosgrain. I put mine on the inside of the hole so that the cord...
I've actually been considering a mesh Me-Sack for my tarp, lately. There are several definite pluses to this over snakeskins. I'll probably make one soon for a trial run.

1) Make sure your quilts are adjusted properly.
2) When there's wind, make sure you set up with your tarp broadside to the wind's direction. It will block a lot of air. If you set up the other...
Just get buckles and stop worrying about all these logistics...
: )
I don't know if this is still a thing, but back in the day, there was a family who lived on the main highway, right at the top of the Yates access road. They cut and sold firewood... I used to get...
For a tarp that long, you might be better off using three tie-outs per side. And in that case, yes you'd have two cat cuts per side too.
A Me-Sack is vastly superior to snakeskins for stowing a hammock. I've tried both countless times and sack always wins out.
Interesting. I've seen that stuff eat straight through silnylon stuff sacks, and through a 1.9 oz hammock within hours.
Be careful with Permethrin on your hammock. That stuff eats up synthetic fabrics.
IMO it's not necessary. I've done both and not seen any real difference in weight or pitch.
I have a worry in the back of my mind about the cat cut actually weakening the ridge seam's ability to...
Egads, this brings back memories. Yeah, this was the first tarp I ever made. Out of at least 30. I think I gave this one away to someone....
Well done! Integrating a bugnet like that isn't easy!
Tom Hennessy is looking over his shoulder right now.
I remember people reporting this issue years ago, but I've never experienced it myself... maybe I managed to get some sort of supersilnylon?? Lol.
Great googa-mooga, what's the point of all this?!?!?
I use a taut line hitch on the stake end, two half hitches on the tarp end. No issues in.... ever. Whatever happened to the simplest solution...
I may be beating a dead horse here, but the Grayson Highlands area on the VA/NC border is phenomenal. One of the most gorgeous places I've been.
There's a nice 1-2 night loop there too, depending...
I wonder why they don't want to be identified as female? Maybe they don't feel safe in a male-dominated environment?
This subforum needs to happen now. With properly strict moderating.
I guess you're talking about me?
Sorry, didn't realize I was causing problems by pointing out toxicity within our community. At least, I didn't think I was causing problems for the women this is...
Here's my .02.
You can save your wallet with DIY. I know others disagree with this, but I've done it myself. You CAN save money.
You can get materials on the cheap. You can salvage some. ...
Shouldn't it be accessible to all members? So that women who come in new can see that we have a place like this? Might make them more comfortable, more likely to stay.
This is true. Although they didn't have much choice but to accept it, since ATTroll himself headed the effort here.
Your post makes it quite clear that you're oblivious to your privilege, as you delineate the very disparities that make a forum like this necessary, but continue to ignore the realities surrounding...
You have women. Camping in hammocks.
There needs to be a place for this. Otherwise, what are we really doing here?
