Maybe use Seatbelts, if you have the time?
Weave seatbelts into a loose net, sew together on overlaps.. should be plenty strong and very little stretch.

FYI everyone, in climbing terms 7mm and under are generally called climbing CORD, not rope. These are used for prussic's, holding/organizing gear, as emergency belts, and even replacing shoelaces...
Like Womble said, its a static rope - little to no stretch.
Mammut 5mm cord is rated at 5.5kn Impact force (dynamic loading), which is just over 500kg.. id say you are safe with the 5mm.
Note: im...
Just wait a week.. it'll rain again soon enough :p
I use a cheap tripod folding stool to hold a book, drink etc - keeps anything potentially sharp out of the hammock.
I use the same buckles for one of my hammocks. Its taken 130kg+/- with no slippage.
You may want to re-do the straps though, look around the forum for ideas
I've used 1.75mm climbing cord on mine, because i had it.
Paracord will work, even old shoelaces/zipties will work..
Try a hammock stand instead?
No damage to the property, movable and you can even DIY one..
Try and get the carabiner s a little further out. You dont want them touching the stand at all!!!
Why?.. Well if they are touching the stand, when you get in the hammock the forces involved may...
Finish my DIY 2 layer ripstop hammock & Sleep in it
Convert an old sleeping bag into an UQ
Bugnet / hammock sock
Snakeskins
Maybe a few stuff sacks
This year - Ive spend hours and hours chilling in the garden in a hammock reading, but only 2 actual nights spent in it.
Next year:
Sleep in hammock more (on trips etc)
Make a stand to hang...
3.. so far:
1 Trekmates Expedition (Modified - gathered end and webbing suspension)
1 Green DIY ripstop nylon (Awaiting suspension)
1 Mesh/rope thing (Only really suitable for a gear hammock /...
Im in.
This is very generous of you..
(And obviously im willing to pay shipping to UK)
From the pic i can see your friend is using climbing carabiner through the end channels of the hammock. How does this affect the lay / set up?
Why not have the gear hammock hang below your normal hammock?
If you use a big enough bug net (Or DIY the 'TED' design i believe it is?) everything would be covered. Would leave the view above...
Ive been looking for those buckles everywhere, nowhere in the UK sells them, what would the postage charge be to send a pair of cinch buckles with loops to the UK?
That is a HMS screwgate (small pointy end, large curved end) It is a locking type. Rated for around 25KN too, plenty for a hammock.
Just an idea, if a carabiner would work for giving the spread...
Unfortunately my mind was elsewhere when packing up and so i forgot to take any pictures :(
Worse still, i only realized the lack of pics on the drive home, too late to even clip it back into...
On a climbing trip over the weekend, and had packed my hammock (A modded TrekMates Expedition - climbing cord cinched ends, and webbing straps) into my bag, just in case, since it took up so little...
For the price vs weight limit, go for climbing rated carabiners, strong, light, simple and proven tech.
They are normally rated at around 25KN static load (2500kg). Id be very surprised if one...
DMM Prowire's.
Wire gate instead of solid, so quite light.
Rated for climbing (24kn static load)
Had them sitting around, they work fine so far :)
Bought the Karrimor.. i figured it had the best temperature ratings and compressed most too.
It was also the last one on the shelf!
I want to buy a new sleeping bag, (partly because my old one sucks, and partly so i can use my old one as a a makeshift UQ), but i cant decide which one to buy out of the following two:
Both are...
Ditto.
Its just soo addictive! I want to go camping just to try out a hammock, never thought that about a tent!!
Ive set up my tent in the garden, only to dry/clean it after uni trips (They never choose camps with any hanging possibilities), never to sleep in it.
The hammock hangs in the garden quite often....
I second this!!
Found one shug video, then another, then another.. 2+hrs watching.
Poncho Liner sounds like the best solution so far then, decent insulation at a price i can afford. Light enough too.
I suppose if the PL doesnt work well enough, i can mod it to be a sleeping bag...
Im only a few days away from having all the parts/materials needed to make my first DIY hammock. I know im going to go on a trip within the next month or two and use it overnight and my research has...
That would only happen if the tarp ridgeline is under the tarp.
If the ridegeline goes OVER the tarp, no problem.
Final option, dont use a continuous ridgeline, just tie off a tarp point. The knot...
Ive only just started hammocking, but already prefer the webbing system over rope/whoopie.
Why?.. Well, the webbing goes around the tree, and is the point of adjustment. One piece of hardware, 2...
Ive been convinced, DIY it is.
Thanks for the link, ive checked out the site and bookmarked it. Unfortunately, they are busy and can not post ANY orders until the 30th. Also, im in the UK, and...
5/5 so far for DIY.. Looks like i need to order some fabric?
I cant sew, but my mum is willing enough to hem the edges for me.
Stevebo - Im thinking of making a simple gathered end single layer...
So i want another hammock, a better hammock.. (My modified Trekmates expedition is nice, but i want bigger, better) I want a hammock good enough to use on weekend camping/hiking/climbing trips, as...
If you really cant let it go...
Then turn it into a Under Quilt like this guy did:
http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=44808
DIY a hammock while your waiting. Then you can hang in your garden waiting for the package..
Only if im relaxing. If im trying to read, then the swaying feels strange.
mereside - The Khaki rip-stop fabric in your first link is the exact same one im considering for a DIY. I'll be watching to see what others say..
Im starting to DIY a hammock, and i want to know which type of insulation is best to use, so:
Which did you choose and why?
-Sleeping pad
Or
-Underquilt
3 or 4mm climbing cord. Cheap, light and rated for nearly 4KN static load.. Probably more reliably than paracord too.
Wow, didnt expect such a warm welcome!
Since pics have been requested:
The Gelert Mini, a piece of rubbish really.. too narrow and finicky to put up. but i am keeping it to hold gear or as a...
Hi from the UK.. im Vinny, and i bought 2 hammocks last year, but have hardly used them due to the difficulty i had hanging them properly.
Thanks to a bit of lurking here, and another hammock...
