same as KMACK
i would say hem all the edges...i don't think those finished long edges are really finished if you know what i mean. i used the channel end like in fronkey's video and it works great for me.
it would take some time, but you could us thread to whip the ends. i have used this many times and if you do it correctly it will hole for a long time. i used to use this for the rigging for my boat....
the lorax
i have had the bag down to 30* and was comfortable while sleeping on the ground with a 1/2 inch wally world blue pad. this is the pad that i intend to use for the hang. i am going to add...
thanks for all the input everyone!! a few more spacifics

Awesome!!! looks great
yep with a camp towel
I really don't see a double layer of fleece getting you down to the temps you are looking for. I have a diy UQ made of one layer of fleece, one ripstop layer, and one layer of quilt batting between...
can't wait to see the updates on this one!!! if it works out well i may employ this idea for myself. although i will agree with catsplat that a sewn through construction is pretty easy for a diyer.
welcome from the burgh. this is a great community and great site for info and finding gatherings and hangs.
i am on the taller size....6'2" and on go with the full length diy. it is easier to sleep in, but it does add weight and bulk to my pack.
i live in black bear country and feel that i have a healthy respect for them. i hang a bear bag about 100 yards or so from my campsite, pack all things that smell like food into the bag including my...
good idea.... great diy....do you use hiking poles. i have found that when i do not use them this happens to me as well, but when i do use them i have no problems. just a thought.
i use a diy hammock, but my buddy..... 6'2" 245 uses a ENO double with no problems.
great idea. i may have to try this out just for the fun of it.
i tend to go with the upper end of tree distance. my hammock is about 11'8" in length and i need the additional space for comfort.
i am a cold sleeper so for me any night time temp is low enough for me to use an UQ.
i just returned from my first time out with my DIY Poly UQ and the lows were in the mid to lower 50"s and i had no problems in this temp range.
any takers
i know that it is short notice but i will be on the AT next weekend starting at rt225 and going to rt 81. (friday - sunday) if you are interested let me know and i will get you more details.
thanks for finishing the look for me. lol. the only important thing that i can remember about the eastern half was there was a lack of water on the lower portion of the eastern loop. the trail maps...
i did the eastern half of the trail about 2 years ago and would love to get back and finish the loop, but i will not be able to make this year. it was a great hike pretty easy going for the half that...
if you have any diy skills you can always make a hammock to your specs. i am 6'2" and my hammock is a diy gathered end style. it goes about 11' long by 58" wide
like DivaB i tend to get stuck on the "what if" i need it. i have gotten better with this but still find that i pack things that i have never used
i.e.
- sewing kit
- spare batteries
- multi...
just wanted to see if anyone is interested in joining me on this hike
DIY UQ done!! (pics to follow) does anyone have a suggestions as to what diameter shock cord i should use? 1/8...1/16?
i go with glasses, knife, wallet, head lamp, and keys. sometimes i will put my water up there to, but normally it goes on the ground beside me.
+1 on fronkey's UQ suggestion. my first time out it was in the low 60's and i still froze. i luckly brought my old WM blue pad with me. i would also bring some kind of hat.
that is a great idea!! i bet that you could make a penny or two from fellow city dwelling hangers
sounds like it was a great time!! i will be on the AT in early June.
tell me about!!!! i wish that i could get out there sooner, but it was the first real weekend that me and my buddy could get together. if you think you will be there let me know.
dimeotane
can't wait to see the results. i will be making mine within the next couple of weeks. details to come.
thanks for the info!! that is the great part about hanging. we are not as limited as the ground dwellers.
just wanted to add some more details if anyone is interested in joing us. we will be leaving the parking area on Rt 225 between 1:00 - 2:00 pm. after that we will start on the trail and work our way...
Me and a buddy of mine are going to be doing a 30 mile section of the AT. we will be starting at Rt. 225 and hiking through to I 81 June 8 - 10. at this point our plan is to stay at Peter Mnt shelter...
Elk Trail in Elk county is one of my fav hikes/hangs. watch out for the bears!!! had 2 of them come about 50yrds from my camp site. sorry....i know that this is not in your area but if you get the...
welcome from the burgh
i know that i plan on sewing all layers together with webbing along the outside for channels. this should stop the layers from shifting, as far as losing loft with use i only get out about 2 -3 times...
Thanks strawhat I already have the fleece and ripstop I just need to get the poly fill. Good to know that I should be able to reach the mid to low 40's with an UQ made of these materials
ok....ok....ok i know that down is best and IX is pretty good too, but i need a fast UQ on the cheap and was at my local Joanns the other day and got to wondering about using 2 layers of 1 inch poly...

i use a double ended stuff sack. the end that acts like a ridge bag is my foot end the open end is my head end. no need for colors or letters.
Insulbrite
I was at the store the other day and came across an insulation material called insulblock. It said that it would be good for pot holders, gloves, coats, etc. any thoughts on how this would work for...
like shug said compression sack. i know that i tend to put mine on the outside of my pack. i know that i run the risk of it getting wet in a sudden down pour.
