I made some titanium ones from 5/8" tubing, the first batch I made were 2 1/2" long which is long enough.

I also made some more that are 3 1/2" which is more than enough for what they need to do....

The Hennessey Scouts are a good option.
I bought one for my son last year, he was 7 at that time, he loved camping in it. Just make sure you set it up very close to your hammock.
