Same here - I don't want any abrasion.
I've been hammock camping for 14 years, and only once did I have an issue with soggy down quilts. It rained all night and there was thick fog. In the morning, there was no sun to dry my quilts out. I...
I have the Dutch Beetle Buckle suspension with Spider/Poly straps that are rated to 350 lbs. I've used them for about 5 years with no wear/tear (but I'm only 165 lbs.). They seem pretty robust, even...
There's a Facebook post that says bikes are not allowed on the Batona Trail. I guess that's why I've never seen a bike on the Batona Trail!
An insulated tarp sounds ineffective, heavy and unwieldy. Exactly what is the insulated tarp insulating? If weight is no object, then just toss a wool blanket over the ridgeline.
I miss the stink of the petroleum-based permethrin. You could take a sniff of your camping/hiking clothes and know if you treated them. Not with the water-based - it just doesn't stink.
I started sewing my own gear about ten years ago with my mother-in-law's Singer sewing machine (maybe 1950's era?). I had never used a sewing machine before (to my knowledge) but it felt very...

1. That's a problem right there. The guylines and ridgeline should be permanently attached to the tarp. With snakeskins, you just disconnect the stakes, roll the tarp (and guylines and ridgeline) up,...
Well, I got no respect for Hummingbird hammocks, never have, so I'm not particularly offended by your post giving them a bad rap. They don't make a great product, but I suppose if you look at a...
I've never tried a top quilt protector, but I imagine it's a condensation catcher just like the topcover. I have a Dutch Chameleon with topcover and the condensation is intolerable to me - even the...
Not to pile on, but I agree with Popcorn Fool - a cot sure seems like a poor attempt at a bridge hammock. A cot is not remotely designed to be a hammock, and it probably won't work out well. Have you...
I agree - the tarp should be as long as the hammock.
At the 2011 or 2012 MAHHA, Dutch gave me a pair of Kevlar tree straps. I only used them once, and didn't like them at all. I wonder where I put them?
A CCF pad is a condensation catcher, which is why I abandoned pads early in my hammock camping adventures. The thing that always baffled me was how most people said they got condensation, but there...
I've never even tried hammock camping without an underquilt. Venting is so easy; just push the quilt to the side, and adjust as temps drop.
Welcome! If you want to change your HF name, just contact a moderator and they'll do it for you. Though it does seem a bit odd to change your HF name 13 years after you joined HF.
I changed my HF...
I enjoy your photos - you are obviously more gifted than I am in the photography department!
I hung a 60" x 102" polyester tablecloth hammock in my office (from tableclothsfactory.com) when I had a back problem several years ago. The ceiling is only about 6 and 1/2 feet tall, but I didn't...
There is no way hanging a mere 4 KG (less than nine pounds) on one end of the hammock would have any effect on your "hang proportion," whatever that is. Sometimes, in blowing rain, I'll hang...
Looks like it's no longer made.
Was I supposed to cut it off? I didn't know.
All that stuff will be compressed, so I don't even count it as insulation. Insulated pants, for example. Sure, the top part of the pants will provide insulation, but the compressed bottom is pretty...
I subscribe to the 10* buffer rule - making sure your quilts are rated at least 10 degrees warmer than the temps you expect to experience. And sometimes, that's wrong as well. I once went camping...
It's got to be really cold before I use an overcover. The condensation is just too much for me. But when it's really cold, yeah, I'll use a top cover.
I generally look at shock cord as the weakest link in any tarp system. It's a crappy product that offers very little benefit in any application. I've been using DCF tarps for the past 12 years and...
As DocTheo said, I don't think you'll be able find any vendor who rents hammocking gear.
I've met several people of advanced age who swear by the bottom-entry (classic) Hennessy Hammock for ingress/egress of hammock.
Congratulations. You now own the heaviest UQ in history!
The only true double hammock is Clark - ENO and their imitators just use "double hammock" as a marketing term - you'll be suffering after 15 minutes if you try and sleep together. Dutch has ways to...
That sums up my assessment of the situation.
I guess I'm just a light sleeper - there is no way possible that I could ever suffocate my own child, even if I had been drinking. I can hear a fly fart at 30 feet while I sleep! My wife was a...
Well, I'll definitely cop to avoiding hammock equipment sold on Amazon, and avoiding hammock equipment from China. But the real reason I don't like OneWind and OneTigris is their stuff is just...
Just learned tonight that my brother-in-law has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. I guess I'm gonna be learning a lot about this disease.
Apparently, he's been having symptoms since 2014. Tremors...
No problem - just contact a moderator via PM. They will hook you up.
If there is nobody guarding camp, I'll pack my stuff up and stash it in the woods off the trail while I day hike. I just can't stand the thought of somebody ripping off my expensive gear.
Well, that's unfortunate, for you as well as for permethrin users. On the other hand, Wikipedia says, "Environmental risk factors of note are exposure to pesticides, and prior head injuries. Coffee...
A 13 ft. tarp sounds ridiculous for the AT, and none of the other options you list sound like anything but extra weight.

Yeah, that word "cheapest" doesn't belong in any sentence about quilts. If you want "smallest, lightest" you have to pay more for lighter materials and fabrics. Your Costco quilt is probably 650...
Therein lies the problem with the Half-Wit design: if you kick your quilt off your legs when you overheat (and I do), the mosquitoes will feast! For that reason, I've never considered the Half-Wit.
Welcome from the Jersey Shore. As Phantom Grappler mentioned, there are plenty of Pine Barrens campers. We're having our 16th Annual NJ Winter Hang coming up 2/3 through 2/5 at Batona Camp in Wharton...
Batona Camp in Wharton State Forest.
Just a reminder that the NJ Winter Hang is coming up. There are a few campsites already reserved.
This hang is pretty much not advertised any more - no raffle or organization of any sort, but...
Yo momma is 96! I saw some gray in your beard last hang, so you're getting up in years too. Pretty soon you're gonna have a combover.
Me, I'll be 63 in eleven days.
Shock cord reminds me...
Now you're talking about "How much can I compress the down before it becomes ineffective as insulation?" It's like someone telling you to mow your lawn, not burn it with gasoline, and you ask, "But...
That won't work - compressed down is worthless.
I only use my 3/4 UQs when the temp is 30* F or higher. I tried all kinds of foot pads but my feet always got cold. Anything below 30* F, I use full length UQs.
I have no use for shock cord anywhere. I find it useless in cold weather, and it doesn't have a long lifespan.
Doesn't make much sense to me!
