As much as possible gets hung from the ridgeline (that days socks, headlamp etc), 'soft' items like extra clothes I use as bottom insulation for my legs along with my pack.
Odd items like stove,...
I occasionally hang from the top hinges of doors in my place when I need a fix. they're about 6ft up but you gotta be lucky when it comes to distance between doors. Wouldn't recommend it for steady...
The GF and I sleep double when on the trail in my ENO DN. One person is on their back and one on their side, swapping every hour or two through the night as needed. After the first night we don't...
Good luck to this year's 2012 hurricane graduates! Hang in there guys.
-Sparrow, 2011 Irene alumni. Tried to sneak in a hike before she hit, misjudged by about 18 hrs and 2 inches of rain
Thanks for the tip, held just fine the last night but I'll definitely replace the screws if this starts to happen more regularly.
My GF is out of town for the weekend so I took the opportunity to string up the hammock for a more comfy night. She's a hammock fan in the backcountry and took to tarping surprisingly well, just not...
Swaying is relaxing, swinging is not.
Kept the bag and cut off the strap as I found it only compressed the bag a negligible amount when compared to the weight it added. The strap I now use to hang things up the the gear closet.
I've used that machine for about a year now. Never had a serious problem or run into something I couldn't sew, I've done 4 layers of cotton duck canvas at one time and while that taxed the machine...
GF and I double up in my ENO DN. Took some practice and getting used to it but as cold sleepers we really appreciate the extra warmth. I can see how it doesn't work for everyone though.
Definitely...
Thats one purdy machine you got there! :boggle:
Not sure if I want it to work fine or if I'm jealous that you might get to look inside.
My GF and I share a single hammock (ENO Doublenest) when out camping (<300 lbs together). We sleep in the same position pictured as Cannibal and Genuine Draft and switch every one to two hours....
I don't mind most night noises in the woods. Two things do freak me out though, the first is the sound of human footsteps. The second is the Tawny Owl call, which is a haunting call best described as...
Yep, that's exactly what I use and what many people start with then switch over to a static rig once they get their preference dialed in.
Clever!
I gotta admit, when size is more of a factor than weight (dayhikes for example) I do sometimes miss the compression strap. Mine is probably 50% bigger than it used to be.
Won't be making it out to meet you all, too much work this weekend. But I'll scope out some local possibilities for next time. I have an idea in the FLNF.
Have fun!

Tinny is a cool dude who has greatly enriched the backpack community with his stove designs but on this topic we disagree.
I've damaged bark using my 1in straps over the course of a dozen...
Winner or no, lets keep this thread going with more submissions!
Nice machine!
I've found the savings of making your own gear in one hobby is quickly offset by the realization that you can now afford to have multiple hobbies!
Now lets see some pics!
Clever!
I definately will be modding my headlamp to so something similar.
Simple, I don't set up the hammock at all until after the storm has passed.
Since conditions can change so rapidly in the backcountry you need to be flexible with your plan. Assuming this is a...
Nice work, you should be proud, but you're teasing us by not sharing the details! What material, dimensions weight etc?
I have the same bag and have been thinking about the same modification. IMO the bag rating is exaggerated on it so I would probably rate the new TQ to 20* for me (cold sleeper here though).
For...
Interesting stuff, and in a rough bell curve no less.
Some curiosity satiated, more curiosity raised.
Sharp looking (machine and gear), better than my first attempt at anything sewing related.
Never mind the looks, historically speaking tailoring (and sewing in general) was a trade dominated by...
83% is the community standard for ridgeline starting length with the expectation that the user will make slight adjustments for personal comfort.
I was just wondering which direction most people...
I agree with Apollo, my original 30* hang felt great but . . .it gets better.
Mine is a whoopie sling made of amsteel with an adjustable length of 100''-120''. When I do use it it's usually around 105'.
Doh!
Good: It's huge and has many tie out points for different setups configurations,
Bad: It's relatively heavy as compared to most other tarps. Some people dislike the PU coating and have experienced...
The Kelty is already PU coated so no need to seal it but every now and then I would check the sealant on the seams and make sure it's not peeling off. I was hanging out under mine when Irene came...
Good article.
Unlike Joey I don't camel up in winter too often since going to the bathroom is such a pain with all those layers. Typically I blouse my coat up over my hip belt to create extra dead...
Grant me the money to buy awesome cottage gear I can not make myself,
Courage to DIY the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.
Darn, too weak. That's what I feared.
Thanks guys.
I put an airsoft BB inside the amsteel about 1/2 inch up from the bury on the non-cinching side of the loop.
So I've been reading up on snakeskins and it seems like most people use no-see-um netting which allows some drying. At the same time I see many people prefer tulle as a material for bug netting...
+1 to guitar strings.
I don't play so I have a few friends who supply me with broken ones.
Only $1.19 new anyways.
That would have been awesome.
Should be submitting another pic in a few days.
Had a bit of free time today, and about 12 ft of extra Amsteel lying around so I made my FIRST whoopie sling! Turns out 12 ft was a perfect length to make an adjustable sling 100-120 inches which is...
Thanks SlowBro for this easy to understand lesson.
Just whipped up my first whoopie sling in about 3 min using guitar string for a fid.
Gotta order more Amsteel!
I would love to make either one of those hangs but wont know until just a few days before if I could make time.
Keeping fingers crossed!
I also would have submitted one had I see this. Next time I guess.
Never even considered the idea but I'd be sure to include a cup holder
Welcome!
Can't have too many NYS folks around.
oooooh!
<------ Sucker for simple clever designs.
My parents have one of their backyard style hammocks with frame and spreaders. It's a really great and comfy hammock of that style.
At 2.75 lbs I don't see their camping hammock as a great deal.
Thanks, I will be using this in the future.
Both sides of the argument are correct.
The weight of the load in the hammock is divided in two AND the force exerted on each end of the suspension is equal to the total hammock load.
The...
