I just got some of that cord from Lawson and it is really nice. I plan to do the same thing as you: tie outs and ridge lines.

I know a lot of people here are going to tell you to just use Whoopie slings, and you certainly could. To tell you the truth I did that on one of my Hennesy hammocks and I didn't like it. (BTW, I...
I have just had all of my tarps out again for a largish family camp hang. I definitely still prefer the Chinook tarp. It just hangs nicer.

I think you can do it by hand if you have the time. Another option might be to buy those grip clips from a place like JRB.
The Superfly looks like it will be close to what I want, but I really like the ones by BWDD! I'll have to give Warbonnet's traps a try though. Thanks for the suggestions.

With Fall pretty much beginning here in the North Carolina mountains, i'm looking for a new winter tarp. I really like the ones made by Backwoods Daydreamer Gear:
...
Yeah, I bought it just so I could copy it!
We recently enjoyed a great day on Lake Fontana in Western North Carolina (about 20 miles from my house, gosh am I lucky) I brought a couple hammocks along to chill in and I think we were all glad...
Simply put, this is awesome. Thanks very much for the post.
Sounds like I better begrudgingly throw in a tent just in case. Thanks to all for the advice. As I have read elsewhere, this is supposed to be a pretty nice place. As for Tybee Island, I was...
Anyone been here? I was thinking of taking the family here for a weekend 'hang'
Rev,
Thanks for your hard work on helping a sewing newbie like me get started. I finally finished all of them and really think they do help. I was having some difficulty visualizing the seams and...
Did you add tie outs for pitching as a rectangle? If so could I see a picture?
...What Opie said! See here.
Just don't be fooled as I was. Fling-It is not the same. Trying to do burys with Fling it is much tougher.
I also have the Guide Gear tarp, but I prefer the Chinook 12' x 9' 6" tarp. Both are good tarps, but I think the Chinook pitches more easily.
This sounds like a good idea. I'll try that today.
If I'm honest, I think it is that I get everything going along great and then I think, hey this isnt so bad, then I stop paying as much...
Thats good to know since I have been thinking of camping over there this summer. I really am becoming more and more afraid that we may find ourselves with a lot more 'hammocks banned' campgrounds in...
I have been learning how to use my thread injector and have found it can be difficult to sew in a straight line! I go along just fine for a while and then things go awry and my stitches start...
Just a quick update, I ordered some 1.75mm Zing-It and found it infinitely easier to splice than the 2.2mm Fling-It. I found it really tough to open up the Fling it and get the needle to find the...
The answer is... Yes!
I have both a Chinook 12' x 9.6' and a Guide Gear 12' x 12' tarp. I had the opportunity to pitch both of them over the weekend on a car camping trip I took with my family.
My personal opinion...
Looks great. Thanks for sharing.
That's cool WV! My dog would never settle for being separated from me though! It would totally freak her out. She's such a pack animal, and we are her pack.
My 60lb mutt insists in getting in with me anytime I set up a hammock in the yard. She thinks she is so special...
That might explain my problem! :)
Opie,
My mistake. It is technically 2.2 mm Fling-it. In any case, I have even more respect for the work you put into your ridgelines. I guess I just need more practice. It's just much harder than...
I got my first spool of Zing-it in the mail today and decided to try doing a continuous loop splice over lunch. I got it done, but it is much tougher than I anticipated. I tapered the line ends and...
I have also bought some of these booklets. Keep it and a length of rope in a few key places. When i or my kids are bored, we practice. Good for memorizing the key knots we use.
I ordered a couple of these myself and have not tried to pitch it yet. I think I'll add some of that ridge webbing as my first sewing machine project! Thanks for all of the images.
This appears to be the beast I now own. Is there some sort of horsepower guideline I ought to look for for sewing webbing? I guess it doesn't matter since it appears I should be able to at least...
Over the holiday I was given a second hand sewing machine that looks to be great for me to start learning to make gear with. It is a "Singer Inspiration 4220/4228." I don't know what I'm doing but...
Two years and counting for me. Everyone in the family has at least one!
I'm not so sure it is a false alarm. I take it more as a warning.
I have seen far worst rule infractions in the NC backcountry than hanging a hammock any way.
It's more of an entry level tarp. There are lighter tarps out there, but they cost more. Some (myself included) want something to play with while they evaluate the lighter options.
It's not all that crazy of an idea. I've done it with a stick and some stakes! Here are some examples:
Commecial Product...
Not to hijack this thread, but that's cool! What's that weigh?
It is about 2 lbs. ~ 30oz
Aint that the truth! I always have a coil of some additional line in my pack too because you never know what you might need it for!
An easy conversion in my head says:
~ 33 ft ridgeline
~ 13 ft guylines
Personally, I think 30' is plenty for a ridgeline and 6'-7' is more than enough for a guyline.
I have that Guide Gear 12x12 tarp as well. It REALLY is a good tarp for the money. The only real problem I have with it is that it is pretty large, especially if you pitch it on the diagonal. I'm...
Nice! Thanks for all the pictures. I will have to make and test a few once my Amsteel line gets here.
I currently use something similar for my tarp ridge lines. It's called 3/32 tether cord. It is much like 'shrunken' paracord but it is a lot less stretchy. I am contemplating a change to...
Sorry, but I'm having trouble visualizing this in use as a carabiner replacement. Any pictures?
Did the same with my girls on Saturday! Too nice not to. Guess I should've used the camera...
I'm not ever planing to get rid of my poncho. It is both lightweight and convenient.
Sounds like a lot of cautions against using a poncho as a tarp unless necessary. Thanks for the advice.
I saw some other posts recommending 1/8" Amsteel. Guess that's overkill?
I've been hammock camping for two years now and I still don't have an under quilt. I dont use a sleeping pad much either. If you're backpacking in a moderate climate (late spring through early...
