The rapids that i talk about are north of the dam (Kernville)
I don't know about south of there which is what your original post asked about.
So, better to ask Broncolite who's done that section. ...
I guess i should have tried to watch more AT movies before making mine. (not really an AT movie but a long distance hiking video)

I've found that if you camp where no one ever camps on the JMT, you don't have bears.
In fact out of 4 JMT hikes, i've yet to see a bear there.
