WB BB, Exped 9 Deluxe and 43 degrees.

WB BB 1.7 DL. I have a decent sleeping bag which is supposed to go down to 20. Will the Exped 9 Downmat deluxe keep me toasty on the bottom at 43 degrees? That is the forecast where I am going. Or should I get a UQ ASAP? Thanks.

P.S. I also have a Exped SynMat 7 Air Pad I got on clearance. Should I bring that too? If so, I assume that the Exped 9 would be on top of the 7?

I used an Exped 9 in hammock on cold winter nights much lower than 43, methnks you'll be just fine. A trick I learned here on HF that helped was to "preheat" the pad with a nalgene filled with hot water, in a wool sock, tossed 15 minutes before bedtime on top of the mid-point between pad and top quilt.

Down-filled air insulates by trapping heat....so it is either your body heat, or the bottles that it traps first!

But all that's for COLD weather. You climb into the hammock, say, at 50 degrees, if the pad starts out a little chilly it will soon heat up.

Thanks. Did you use the Exped 9 by itself or with an UQ? I edited my post to say that I also have an Exped 7.

I've done it both ways. Single digit nights I had a JRB Nest under as well.
I'm sure I was in 30's using the Exped by itself. The first winter I was into hammocking I was out in the yard a lot trying different combinations of insulation. I told my wife I was a guninea pig in my own hammock science experiments, but she was not amused.

For your anticipated temps I've also used a Exped 7 shortie, with a bit of CCF cross-wise at the shoulders to keep them from chilling out, and a sit pad under my feet. Because of the height of the Exped my lower legs don't rest immediately on the hammock body the way they do with an underquilt and so I seem not to need CCF all the way from where the shortie ends to my feet.

I've used the Exped 9 Deluxe down into the teens with lots of wind with no underquilt, but got a cold backside. Actually I had it down to 9 degrees at Mt. Rogers. I'm fine with it above 20 degrees with no underquilt. I've used it in 30 and 40's with no underquilt and it's great. Hot water bottle trick works great!

I've used an exped 7 DLX down to 25 or so and was warm. At 43 I would think you would be absolutely fine.

You WILL be good to go with that set-up. might just want to put something under your shoulders in the hammock. a small pit of foam or just some extra clothing.
Be stoked on food before bed and slumber in warmth and comfort.......

Even in the 30 degree range, I have been toasty with an Exped 9 Delux and a top quilt.
