So, after a Boy Scout camp out last October my son said "Dad, why don't we do this every weekend?" 52 weeks later, my answer is a solid "Sure, we can do that!"
About half the weekends (usually only 1 night), were spent in hammocks, some in quinzees and too many in tents (lots of mosquitoes this year.) We had a high of 80 degrees and a low of -30, but not once did my son waver from going out. A lot of the camp outs were on our property, but we spent of few nights on the shores of Lake Michigan, as well as various camping areas in Northern MN. We had a scary night of being serenaded by a wolf pack on a frigid February evening and often provided cover for various mice under our large tent.
I've always enjoyed a great relationship with my son, but this past year has added layers upon layers of new things to talk about and experience.
I camp once or twice a week, but for the last 120+ days my son hasn't used his bedroom, opting to sleep in a tent or hammock since the beginning of summer. We are planning our first over night on the Superior Hiking trail later this month, which was one of the goals we set right from the beginning.
I've posted a few reports of our various adventures on here, but in celebration of our year anniversary (and no, we aren't stopping yet), here is a picture of last weekend's camp out on the Whiteface River in Meadowlands, MN.
