Don't worry about the tarp. If it works it works. What is important is that you set it up and lessons are learned. You found out what works and what did not. Keep the things that work for you and try out new ideas to replace the things that don't work. That's why we are all here. Sharing ideas and tips. Heck my first "dedicated" rain fly was a 9'x12' 2mil plastic sheet that I got from one of those big box fixer up stores and then cut down to 9'x9' . I used white duct tape on the edges to protect it and make the loops on the corners.

You can't sleep in a hammock without a $250 cuben fiber tarp.

    I thought everyone knew that.

What?! Oh crap, I've been doing it wrong!! So have the 5 or 6 other folks I've modded blue and brown poly tarps for. Next thing you know I'm gonna learn that we have to have down/argon summer quilts and our PLUQ/PLTQs won't work anymore...

Basic hammock camping BORING blue tarp works but ugly...

Oh my god, if I had used a clear tarp I would have been up all night! The moon was almost full. And so bright you could not see hardly any stars!

So the tarp was for moon light shade and sun shade and wind shade.

Maybe a bit of dew protection, but in California, there isn't any moisture till tomorrow.

And even that is going to be minuscule.

    No rain fly.
    But snake skins.

The mat lets me put my feet down without standing in the dirt. Then put on my shoes.

3 days of really car camping.

But with the hammock, I didn't have to sleep with the guys in the van. The van would have been fine.

But this was a good test when I didn't have the van. And after the first day, I was finding it still comfortable., so I stayed in it.

I had a pad, sleeping bag. Full sized pillow. And a sheet. It was 48 or so every night. And nice but 90, during the day.
Weylan, I have the stock fly from my Expedition, no longer in use as my wife got me the HH Hex tarp for my birthday. If you are interested shoot me your address and I can send the stock fly. No cost to you, kind of a pay it forward thing. I would be happy to help you out and send it along, let me know if you want it.
