Pipe in ground. I use a piece of2.5" electrical
PVC conduit in the ground. Then a fencing corner post for a 4' fence. Inside of
that a 10' piece of 2" electrical EMT conduit. Then us fence top rail for spreader bar at top. The 2.5"PVC makes it easy to take down yet leave the hole to put it back up.

On top rail be sure and use tek screws to keep the joints from pulling apart.

Not to muddy the water, but if you do the posts, and a cross brace on top, as a temporary, from what I have heard and seen, this means you can get by with the 4x4.

I have a much faster cheaper and lighter method.
2 large diameter (1.5-2") bamboo poles 8' long. Stake or tie off at 4 & 8 o'clock about 15' apart. Hang the hammock between. I put the poles on a ceramic plant try to keep it from sinking into the ground.
I've recently upgraded to Kelty tarp poles. The tip makes it much easier to tie off, but I still need a platform to keep it from sinking into the backyard.

Concrete or no concrete, I like the idea of planted sleeves in the ground that are the exact exterior diameter of the posts you wish to use. As a volleyball coach, I've used sleeved inserts buried deep beneath gym floors and in sand/grass courts for decades. The cleaner option of being able to remove the posts when you wish has a lot of visual and yard maintenance upside, IMHO.

No concrete here either. I have planted 5 hammock trees and all were planted in holes about 3 to 4 feet deep with some gravel placed at bottom. I used 12 foot long pier pilings ( think telephone poles ). I can hang up to 9 hammocks at one time with this set up. I use a Pecan tree in the middle as the base. I could probably to 10 but the last one would need some really long tree straps

I do not recommend using 4x4's as I have had two of them break on me.

Nicely done, Gunner. Those round poles are much easier on straps than square/rectangular posts. Like.

I respectfully agree. You want the post-hole to drain. What do you get when you pour concrete into a hole and set a post in it? A concrete cup. Water pools in the bottom and soaks into the end-grain of the post speeding the rotting process and then when it comes time to replace that post you have to deal with 50+ lbs of concrete buried 3ft down. Just make the hole about as big as the pole you're putting in it and tamp & fill the hole around the post in 6 inch layers.
