Under Quilt thought...

First off I have to say thank you all for making this such a great site!

I'm looking at making a cheap under quilt for an up coming trip to Yosemite next week. What I am considering is...

Going to walleyworld and buy a fairly light weight cheap (less than $75.00) sleeping bag, preferably rectangular in shape. Cut it in half. Then sew up the edges and add either some snaps or Velcro to attach it to me ENO clone.

What are your thoughts?

it will work...it will be heavy and bulky (but you didn't say if you were backpacking or not)
IMO...sew it in half FIRST, then cut. It wil eliminate any worries of insulation escaping...a little cleaner

If weight isn't a concern, I'd put some cord channels down the sides and attach the uq to the suspension instead of directly to the hammock. It'll give you more flexibility for venting or snugging for less effort in camp.

I was looking at a Walmart earlier today and saw a 40 degree bag for $9.88.

I think that was the weight; 9.88 lbs.

Nope it was a 3lb bag for that much money. I almost picked one up myself. It was one of their really cheap bags.

close but no cigar. Actually they advertise that as a 3# bag. (trust me on this I know it well!) It is a little bit short for a full sized hammock but that's no big deal if you don't have to mess around with a BEEP.

Please do NOT cut it in half... It will not be wide enough to fully cover your butt. It is a very workable idea. One which I have done numerous times and for which there are a few tutorials on the forum. One is for the Sprtsman Guide sleeping bag to a top quilt but it will work just as well for an under quilt. The typical sleeping bag is about 60" or so wide when fully opened. You just end up cutting off a few inches to bring it into usable width for most single wide hammocks.

Please note.... Most of the suspensions that you will see for hanging an underquilt assume a certain weight (very light) which will not meet this project. All that means is you will have to end up tweaking how you hang it. If I can be of any direct assistence having done this numerous times don't hesitate to contact me. There are others who can be of great help as well. We have a very knowledgeable bunch.

I seem to remember rectangle bags being wider, but upon review, the are indeed not so wide.

Keep the width around 40-48"
I still stand by "sew first"
