    Awesome new winter hanging idea

I don't know where this came from but i was thinking about winter camping and how one of the best ways to be warm while winter camping (on the ground) is to build a snow cave of some kind (igloo or quincy) And just now I was thinking how could i hang a hammock inside of a snow cave. could you build a snow cave between to trees? if you could it would be hard to dig around and i had this idea.If you built your cave just long enough that you could hang your hammock from the sides (hmmm would that work with some kind of ice ax?) you could dig thin holes in either side and put your suspension through them then make something to spread the weight of the hammock over the outside of the cave. like some kind of giant snow shoe. hmm it would be scary to test it though. People suffocate in collapsed snow forts.

    Turk has done something similar:

I can't seem to find the thread where he discussed this trip, but I seem to remember him being fairly comfy using this method. Course, the work involved to make camp is another thing altogether.

Knowing NH somewhat this may not be a problem... but that's a whomping lot of snow. Build a snow care 5' high by 10' long... Yowsa... I think I would spend most of the night just trying to build the thing. It would be daylight before I got it made. Of course here in PA we haven't had enough snow in the past three years combined to build even a bird's nest.

Cannibal shame shame cutting live trees to build a shelter. AND using any woood to build a snow shelter you cut out half the challenges and fun and the shelters you make with just snow are so much better

I think just jeff has info about this on his site. If i remember right, he talks about making a snow trench to hang in that blocks the wind. I think that would be a lot safer than trying to hang from iced over snow walls.
