I'd recommend starting out hanging in the back yard or porch for a week straight...see if your aches improve.
If not, no need to go through the work of hammock in the bedroom
If yes, your wife should understand enough to want you not to hurt...(at least mine did) and after that, it is simply of a will and a way (I'd recommend TinaL's suggestion as a great start!)
and one other small thought...I cannot speak for anyones else, but for the first week I hung in the bedroom, all I dreamed about was camping! I kept waking up thinking it was time to pack up! weird

When I was a teenager I had a mayan hammock in my room that I slept in most nights. It was hung off hook type bolts that my parents drove into the studs. Of course this was in the days of solid wood construction, lol, so who knows if that would be ok now...

But they were about a 1/2 inch in diameter and were drilled and then screwed into the wall and I hung directly above my bed. It was heaven.

95% of the time I sleep in one of my Brazilian hammocks. Just too comfy.

If I were going to replace my bed with a hammock I would probably make or buy a hammock made out of a cotton or similar natural fabric. I think it would be more comfortable in the long run when rain and condensation isn't a problem

Similar. 37 tough years. 6'1", 215#. I sleep in a hammock on and off. Off being when my wife says "Get this @#$% hammock stand out off my room."

Back pain since as long as I can remember, stiff mornings, sore shoulders and hips from sleeping on my side. Sore back if I sleep on my back.

The hammock really does help. Only me in it. Haven't built a furniture grade stand for it yet, but I will eventually. It will be smaller than a normal metal stand, because I will build to fit my hammock. Something like this.

Thanks for all the help and advice. I'm hoping to get a camping hammock in time for elk season, I will hang that in the garage or somewhere and try it out for a while to see if it helps the pain.
I really hadn't thought about the bed being easier to make, I guess that's a perk. I think my wife will be ok with me in a hammock if the pain goes away. She just turned 30, but I think she's going through menopause. She has windows open and two fans blowing in the bedroom all the time, I've been sleeping in my sleeping bag for the past year, she just uses a sheet.

would making an ultra wide hammock work like as wide as you are long and them hang it with EXTREME sag and lay almost or completely horizontal.
