    DIY Gear Loft

I had some extra 1.9 ripstop laying around so I made a gear loft! Will I ever use it? Maybe not. It fits my 25L rucksack very well. It only weighs about 2-3oz. total. (I'm not really sure about the weight because I don't have a scale yet.) I just used 550 for the ends. The finished dimensions of the loft is 35"x39" with a 2" channel on each end. Pretty neat little project and it didn't take very long at all.

It also helped me sharpen my thread injectors skills.

Nice work. Now make a top cover in case it rains! Is it steady or does it roll over?

It's steady. It's got a nice sag to it. I have some sil-nylon that I could use to make a top cover.

EDIT: Year 4 of a 7-year drought here in SoCal. :|

You mentioned it fits your pack. Would it do double duty as a pack cover? Also experiencing the drought and wondering if I'll ever need a pack cover or UQP or the like, but they seem like good diy projects. Anyone experiment with Tyvek as a gear hammock? I found the soft version on Amazon advertised for kite making and it says sewable.

Tyvek is pretty easy to sew, the holes made by needles and thread widen a little with use though, so don't expect it to be waterproof at the seams.

I was thinking about hanging it above the hammock and but under the tarp. It's wide enough that it envelopes the entire pack so I wouldn't be concerned about it falling on me.

If you used sil-nylon instead of regular ripstop, it could definitely double as a pack cover. You would still need some sort of rain fly as mentioned above but it wouldn't require much more work or time.

I have one that I made of Sil that I use as a pack cover while packing and then attach whoopies to hang it under my hammock. This does require me to hang a bit higher off the ground but it makes it easier for me to get out. I LOVE it and use it for every trip that I take. The whoopies allow me to adjust and I can move it slightly from foot to head to avoid any uncomfortable spots while sleeping. I haven't thought about hanging it above my hammock as I can just reach down and grab the clothes that I need to change in the morning.

I wouldn't go camping without mine.
The person who says that it can't be done, doesn't

If I were using a bigger pack, I would most likely hang it below. With the 25L, it's not too much. I'll have to do some more field testing but it's so light that I don't think I would leave it off.
