I got myself a land-rover defender with a nice comfortable double bed on the inside. Clearly not much use to a hammocker so I bought a roof rack and hung from that!

Like a portable tree.
Nice!! This brings back the question if the roof rack of a xterra would support me??? Nice rig you have there!
If you had three vehicles to hang from everyone could sleep in hammocks and you wouldn't need any trees. Was thinking about that the other day.
Cool, I'd like to see more of the LR!
More pics!
Hang from the opposite side of the vehicle and connect to the rear door laying your strap across the roof of the vehicle. Open the window, attach strap to the top frame of the window, shut the door, roll the window back up without pinching the strap in the window track.
Roof rack *might* be fine. I've hung as I'm describing before between two vehicles with no issue at all. (The two vehicles were a Jeep Cherokee and a ford explorer...)
(6'5" - 340lbs. at the time..)
we were out on the beach with zero trees but I had brought my hammock..
You don't HAVE TO be crazy to be here - But I assure you it will help.....
An LR Defender and its roof rack are a different beast than an Xterra and its rack. Not sure what year yours is, but I would not have felt safe hanging from the rack on my 02 XTerra.
Nice idea and like the hammock setup you are using.
Is it hang time yet?
@ Chriss - yes you can hang from the factory roof rack of your Xterra but not the bar of an aftermarket rack (Yakima) I broke the clamping mechanism of my Yakima rack by strapping to the round bar and the other end to a tree. I re-rigged to the factory rack ( where it meets the roof) at the back and it worked great, bit of a pain though when you need to get into the rear cargo area from the rear gate. You have to watch you don't shut the gate on your whoopie sling. Positioning your SUV perpendicular to your hammock would be ideal.
