Add a pad or stack UQs for extra insulation??

Just wondering what peoples experience is for added insulation for winter hanging. I do not plan on hammocking much during the winter (20 degrees or colder), but will probably spend a night or two during Scout Polar Bear activities. I am not going to go out and spend the money on a heavy winter UQ for just a couple of nights a year.

As I see it, my two choices are to use my wife's UQ along with mine and stack them, or slide a pad in between the layers of my hammock and use that in combination with my UQ. What are the pros and cons of each? I suppose I can go out and try each and see what works, and probably will, but any advice I can get before hand will help.

    Thanks.

    3 options:

    pad + pad
pros: incredibly warm, not affected by wind.
    cons: bulky, potential condensation issue

    Pad + UQ
pros: incredibly warm, less bulk than 2-pads
cons: potential condensation, wind affects uq performance

    Uq + UQ
pros: not bulky, no noticeable condensation
cons: fiddle factor, affected by wind

What is the best place to put the reflectix? Will it work in between the layers of my hammock? Will it work better than a thermarest pad? I'll be car camping, so I don't care about weight or bulk.

I used the reflectix directly under my sleeping bag and it worked very well. Not sure how well it would work with a double layer hammock. I don't see why it wouldn't work though. As far a thermarest goes, It's probably as effective as the reflectix, it also depends on what will work for you.

Reflectix is going to have the same condensation issues as a pad. Yes, place it between the double layers if you decide to go that route.

Personally, I'd stack UQs if you have them, especially if you're car camping. Since I got my first UQ I haven't used a pad since.

DuctTape summed it up for the most part. We should probably add the obvious: including a pad gives you a bit more flexibility/survivability if you need to go to ground, and IMO Pad + Pad has lots of fiddle factor.

If you pick a good place to hang and pitch a 4-season tarp really low that should take wind mostly out of the equation I'd imagine.

I stack UQs. It works great. Don't have to worry about condensation.
