EGL Late Fall 2014 Last Dash Canoe Hang

    Hey all,

    www.langfordadventure.com

I was thinking about doing a quick dash up north for a late season paddle on either Nov 7-9 or Nov 14-16, 2014 depending on the weather. It'd be a chance to get in some final canoeing for the year and raising a toast to Sergeant-at-Arms Vickers. I've got it into my head to make the drive up to Killarney. With the leaves off of the trees, the white quartzite ridges of the La Cloche Mountains’ should be all but gleaming. It's been 15 years since I've dipped a paddle up there and it's long overdue. Luckily it's low season; the park's not accepting reservations and it's first come first served. We shouldn't have a problem finding sites, especially since I was hoping to camp on a different site each night. In the unlikey event that we need a backup, Algonquin's on route.

As an alternative, Crown land's an option as long as it's quiet, without cottages or powerboats and there are trees to hang by. I'd even consider a light backpacking trip if someone knew some epic, simple awesome, totally scenic hikes that weren't too taxing.

    Cheers

I'd like to make this one! Went to Killarney for the first time this year and loved it. We camped on Philip Edward island, lots of free crown land and semi-developed sites, while still using the Killarney parking and water access.

I won't be available Nov. 14, but I might be able to get in on the weekend prior. My boat might be stored in Pembroke by then so it should be right on the way! Just have to arrange vehicles. I'll be watching this thread!

Chances are pretty slim for me but as always I'll see what I can do.

I'd like to go but I need to check whether there are any rental canoes available that late. Mine's a little heavy to portage very far.

Fair enough. A quick look at some potential routes include a couple of portages that are upwards of 1400m. Nothing too long, but you don't want to be carrying a heavy canoe if you can help it.

I'll be watching the thread. Won't be able to commit yet to being "sick" on a Friday but I'd love to go. After chatting today with one of my students who's planning to guide this summer I realized I haven't paddled since the August long weekend.

Actually looking at my calendar, the 14th is a PD day and I should be able to take an unpaid day.

If you do decide to canoe I've got to warn you about the 1280M Portage refered to as "The Pig" on this map http://killarneyoutfitters.com/killa...l_park_map.php It is 600M steep uphill and 600M steep downhill. If you follow the Lacloche-Silhouette trail around counterclockwise from the bottom you'll find it.

Legend has it that under the light of a late autumn moon, travellers can walk "The Pig" guided by the glow of the souls that lanquish amongst the rocks of that brutal trail. I know, because a piece of my own soul lingers dimly near the top by a gnarled pine, the price of passage paid long ago. There it lies, like so many others, until the day that their owners come to reclaim them. The Pig and I are well aquainted.

In the meantime, I was thinking about George>OSA/Camp>Norway/Camp>Out

Last time I was on the pig, a cottager in a atv blew buy and promised us a beer at the end. Didn't deliver though. Motivated us to get to the end but a huge let down.

Never camped on OSA. Usually one of the first lakes to fill up. Norway back to George is a bit of a hike though.
