Results of my first DIY Project

First off I want to say thank you to the members of this community who have offered their knowledge and experience to the forum. I know lots of people have benefitted from this and I have as well. I have been doing research and trying to determine how I wanted to go about constructing my new toys for quite a while and this resource has been invaluable.

I have been hammock camping for a few years using an Eno DN with their envelope bug net and the Dry Fly. These have worked well for me but I have really wanted to make something here lately and this has filled that need. It has also allowed me to shave some additional weight off my pack. Enough about me, on to the goods and photos.

The hammock design is based on Xtrekkers model and is 10'6" x 58". Body material is Argon 1.6 and the triangles are 1.1 sil. Suspension attachment / gathering is very similar to Xtrekker's although I used continuous loops in Amsteel so I can utilize whoopie slings with the sweet Whoopie Hooks from Dutch. Ridgeline is a UCR in dynaglide. Other difference from the Xtrekker model is I went ahead and permanently attached the bug net because I use it year round. It is stowable under the triangle if needed. Final weight of the hammock is 15oz.

Tarp added with NoSeeUm snake skins. The tarp is a combination of the DIY Gear design and several others I have seen here. I ended up making it a little narrower to save some weight. The material is 1.1 sil in olive yellow from Rip Stop by the Roll. I originally saw this on Poca's winter tarp and loved the color. I made the pattern in CAD and will add it to the thread once I grab it off my computer at work. Also need to take it in and get a final weight for the tarp but I am guessing it will be ~20oz.

Integrated storage for guy lines and stake. Got the Ti D rings and Ti stakes from Dutch as well. I am quite addicted to his stuff.

A little Dutch bling for the tarp ridgeline.

Guy lines are self tensioning UCR's. Can't remember the thread but most of the inspiration for these came from here as well.

I wanted to use a fairly deep cat cut on the tarp so that called for a really small hem. I practiced quite a bit with a 3mm hemmer foot and once I got the hang of it I really like the results that it gave. Now that I have the hang of it, I use it all the time.

Overall I am very happy with how everything turned out and those results are in large part due to the ideas and advice found here. I have learned a tremendous amount and am excited to get this puppy out in the woods!

Great piece of equipment. That is surely a thing of beauty.

I hope you have many years of enjoyment from your hard work. I have found that my DIY rig is my favorite since it "fits" me just right AND I made it myself.

By the way, I notice that you have only 2 posts. That's a whole lot of lurking and researching you have done before your complete rig was made. That's just awesome. I'm glad you have joined the fun.

Next is your insulation to match the rig, then an UQP, pack cover, backpack.........
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

    SHWEEEET! Nice work!

I like your trick for wrapping the tarp guy line around the grip of your trekking pole (last pic) ... might hafta steal that one.

Thank you for the compliments, much appreciated. I have a total of 6 attachments, 2 on the ridgeline and 4 guy lines.

I picked the yellow because it coordinates with some of my other gear (rain jacket, pack). I also just really like the grey / loud color combinations you see these days.

Thank you, I like mixing a little form in with function. I am really excited to try it out but have little doubt that it will be my favorite. Just makes you feel good to know you did it yourself.

I have spent a lot of time reading and subscribing to figure out exactly how I wanted to do things. It helps that I have been hanging a while and had a good idea of what I wanted before starting.

You are on point on the next project, researching options for the UQ now.

I do indeed. I am an engineer and always designing things for others. Feels good to design and make something for myself.

Thank you! I can't take credit for that trick, it came from one of Shug's videos on porch mode.

Thank you, it took A LOT of patience. Some nights I just had to stop and pick it up again later because I began rushing.
