    Coyote Gulch, Escalante UT (Hammocks)..?

I'm thinking of planning a trip to Coyote Gulch in Escalante. I wanted to know if anyone has been before and if it is at all hammock-friendly.

If not, any Southern Utah backpacking areas you know about that are?

    Thanks!

    Joe

It's a beautiful place. I seem to remember many stands of cottonwoods. But it's been many years since I've been in there. They say the memory is the 2nd thing to go, but I don't remember the first.

I'd be very interested in this as well. I've never hiked Coyote Gulch but I've heard great things about it and would be much more likely to do it if I knew for certain there are places for me to hang my hammock. It's supposed to be a fantastic spring trip.

It can be done, but that is one of the most heavily used canyons in the whole area and you will be competing with others for campsites. An additional route to think about is the loop from Egypt bench and up 25 mile wash. It is pretty hammock friendly. And the Golden Cathedral can't be beat, if you see it in the right light.

But back to the Coyote Gulch route; there is a bench just West of Coyote Bridge that makes a great campsite (dry). You will need to climb a steep embankment up to the right. I hung there in Spring of 2012. There are a couple places to hang up there, but of course, bring plenty of extra rope. Also. not a bad idea to hedge your bets by using a pad as under insulation on a trip like that.

I have hung in that particular canyon at least 4 times, but usually by myself. Finding two hanging sites is very hard. Here is a photo from 15 years ago near where Coyote Gulch meets the Dry wash from the North (shortly before Coyote Bridge).Escalante99.jpg Have a great time!

I've been there, but its been quite a few years (10+). From what I remember it was pretty lush, but only in sections and there was a bit of competition for camping spots. I'd at least plan to go to the ground for a back up in case you set up camp where there is nothing but beautiful slot canyon walls and dirt.
