Megss and I were hanging in the nature park that backs up to my property. There are a LOT of deer that roam the area. We were hanging maybe 15 feet apart when we heard one of them starting to puff out and dig his/her foot. I thought if one of us even flinched we were going to get whacked like a piniata. Took me a while to get to sleep after that

A couple years back, I was hanging with LiquidPlasma (a lurker here). Something tripped over one of the guylines on my tarp, then ran under the foot end of his hammock. I maintain that it was too short to have been a deer, but too big to be a groundhog or raccoon, judging by how heavy it sounded. My best guess is coyote, but I'll probably never know. I have seen coyotes in the park before.

hanging the other weekend in the national forest. I was at a designated primitive camp that have been set up on the trail as alternative to hunter camps. Unfortunately, because it's the first year of the designated primitive camps, a lot of the hunters don't know where they are located. I woke up at 4am to a shotgun blasting nearby. There was no moon so it was completely dark. Scary that someone was shooting that close in the dark.

Dead asleep with no bug net or tarp (a lovely July night) and a squirrel or gust of wind knocked an acorn from a branch above me. Random objects landing on your face will wake you up in the least gentle of ways.

A screaming owl just outside of my hammock. Extremely loud and close. I guess it didn't like me there.

When the very large, healthy-looking tree that I was tied too fell over in the middle of the night.

Mine was another instance of something unknown coming under my hammock to do what I'm not sure, but when I sat up in surprise I sat on the poor thing and it had a hard time getting away. It would have been mostly funny except I sensed something off near my head that was much larger and just watching. Thank goodness it wasn't a porcupine!

I live on a property where the coyotes are common and quite loud. Funny how you get used to that sound. Scariest thing may have been a large moose walking right into camp up to the fire and about 10 feet or less from me prior to wandering off.
