South American "native" hammocks are in tropical areas. Like their clothing, there doesn't need to be much there.

In sub-tropical areas, like Florida, we can also go without UQ/Pads for sometime, but, when the temps drop below 70*F for most, something is needed.

In the jungles in tropical areas, it can get wind/rain induced cold and they would add something to their hammocks and bodies. Fabric hammocks with a better weave than nets were also started here. The Father/Mother of modern camping hammocks.

So, like most modern items, we advance and adapt for diverse and extreme conditions.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

I too am worried about carrying stuff because I will be living out of a 50L pack. Don't think this would work for me either for a number of reasons. Right now I am working with the Backcountry Bed and inflatable insulated mattress. So far works great but have not tested below mid forties yet so still figuring it all out. Good luck.

Another thing to consider...would a net hammock made out of cord/rope that is strong enough, yet large enough to be comfortable, be more bulky than rip stop nylon? I imagine it would be bulkier and heavier, reducing any savings you would get in those areas. You mention bulk as a motivator to look into alternate methods, but aren't you still carrying bottom insulation? Maybe I don't understand what you are trying to accomplish.

My first few hammock overnights were in a net hammock using a 20 deg synthetic sleeping bag. Lows around 50 still cold on bottom and backside looked like a checkerboard. Pretty uncomfortable too.

Plus, you are still carrying a sleeping bag. Essentially the same as carrying a TC and UQ. If using down, they are very light and compress very small. No bulk or weight savings.

a friend of mine got one of those net hammocks from an army surplus store and I found lying in one of those does not come close to the comfort of a solid material hammock
