Here's a thread that explains it (search the page for "box" to find the first post mentioning it)

Also, I measured the loft on my 1.5" baffle topquilt and it is about 2". So probably a 30*F by most standards. That seems to jive with my expirience so far.

Thanks for all your inputs and recommendations Boston. They've been very helpful.

Materials are set to arrive some time next week. I'll keep you posted on how it turns out. Thanks again!

I think I'll be starting on one of these as well on Monday and this answered most of my questions as well.

Maybe you could use the excel calculator for the under quilt to make your top quilt ?

You may want to consider a Karo Step quilt. I go that route if the average thickness I'm going for is 1.5" or less. Those thin quilts require so many baffles.
Did my sewn-through 50* as a differential cut. It works, but is probably not really necessary. I overstuffed by 20% to prevent down shifting (and to make the chambers come out to an easy 1/2 oz each), so I could get away with fewer sew lines.

If you do decide to use a differential cut, remember your darts to bring the outer shell length and width down to what the inner shell is...doing it on the fly results in a fairly ugly quilt...

    Hope it helps!

I agree with you. A differential cut for a warmer TQ is probably overkill and not necessary. That being said, I am currently planning to use Boston's dual differential calculator. Ha!

It's a good thing my material's haven't arrived yet with the number of times I've changed my design.

In all fairness, it's CatSplat's calculator. I just did some minor tweaking

Say you want 1.5" loft for a 40 degree top quilt. How do you decide the height for your internal baffles?
I made a quilt with these desired specs about 1.5 months ago. I used a 1" baffle height but with the overstuff the loft gets just over 1.5" at the highest point.
For reference, the dimensions are 72"x50" and I used ~6.5oz of 800FP down (44% overstuff). With my 20F Incubator, I'll take this quilt down to 30.

Interesting. Thanks for the reference point. Did you end up using a differential cut? Is that 6.5oz before or after your 44% overstuff?

I am looking to make a 72"x56" half taper down to a 42" footbox with 1" baffles and 1.5" of loft for 40deg. I am calculating around 8.3oz w/ 10% overstuff of 800fp to achieve this, so I am curious how you arrived at your fill.

Are you calculating your fill correctly?

    Not even taking into account the taper: 56" x 72" x 1" = 4032 in^3

    4032 in^3 / 800FP = 5oz ×1.1= 5.5oz

Using the UQ calculator for a TQ can get you into trouble, especially for a tapered quilt. I'd caution you to make sure you're entering the information in such a way that it represents the quilt you want to make.
