    Tips on down stuffing

    About to stuff an under quilt,
    Is there any tips or best ways to down stuff and get the right amount in each baffle or is it just guess work ..?

    For the right amount of down, you can calculate the volume of each chamber
    Length x width x baffle height.

    Then you can calculate the weight of down you need for each chamber, based of the quality of your down (cuin = cubic inches per ounce).

    860cuin/250gr = 0,1242773568 m³
    1l = 2,011629523 gr

    800cuin/250gr = 0,115610535 m³
    1l = 2,162432688 gr

    700cuin/100gr = 40,462 l / 0,040462m³
    1l = 2,47147557 gramm

    The best method for me was to take the down in a foil covered baby-tub. Then I stuff the down slowly in a plastic-tube for weigh and fill in the geared up Quilt with a handle. It is an advantage to have a very exact weigh station with a resolution of 1/10 gramm.

    It works very well when you take care and move slowly. With a vacuum cleaner with a little piece of no-see-um-netting you can catch the few downs flying arround easily.

    I probally don't need to say this, but you might want to use a dust mask or bandana over your nose and mouth so you don't accidentally breathe in anything.

    I think the the best advice when stuffing by hand is to move really really really slow. To get even amounts I just went down the line of baffles putting one handful in each one until my down was gone. I'm sure it's not exact but I can't tell that any of the baffles are uneven. I put less in the edge baffles because I thought it would be more useful in the middle.

    ^^^THIS^^^ I go outside on a calm day. You won't lose enough down to notice the difference.

    My scale only goes to the whole gram. So I use a cardboard box and then use the venturi method to blow the down into the baffles. This only works if there is somewhere for the blown in air to escape to.

    I am thinking of setting up my large beech tent and doing it in there, moving slow is a good idea.

    Move slow Work in an area without much air movement and wear clothes that aren't very static-prone if you want to stay relatively clean. I use bulk down and put it in a large bowl on a kitchen scale next to me. Then, when I take out a handful I can see how many grams lighter the bowl is, and how much I have in my hand. Then, when you are stuffing the baffle, reach as far in as you can before you let go of the down; the further you are from the end, the more space you will have to get the down off your hand before you remove it. Have some clothespins ready to clip the baffles shut as you are done with each one. Have fun!
